Ghaziabad – May 19, 2026: A video showing a rape-accused man being celebrated with garlands, slogans, and a roadshow-style procession after his release on bail has sparked widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny over public reactions to serious criminal cases.
The accused, identified as Sushil Prajapati, a former member of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, was released on bail on May 17 after spending nearly nine months in jail in connection with the alleged rape of a law student. Soon after stepping out of prison in Ghaziabad, he was greeted by supporters with garlands, slogans, and what appeared to be a celebratory procession.
In the widely circulated video, Prajapati is seen dressed in white clothing and heavily adorned with marigold garlands as supporters lift him onto their shoulders and carry him through a roadshow-style convoy. The atmosphere resembled a victory rally, with people cheering, recording the scene on mobile phones, and flashing victory signs.

Several supporters were seen embracing the accused, while others reportedly touched his feet in a gesture of respect. Vehicles followed in convoy as slogans were raised and flowers were showered on him.
Police said they are reviewing viral footage of the event to assess whether any legal provisions were violated, particularly in relation to public order and the organisation of the procession. Officials have not yet confirmed whether any additional cases will be registered in connection with the roadshow.
According to allegations in the case, the accused had taken the student to a flat under the pretext of introducing her to a lawyer, where he allegedly raped her. The case remains under judicial consideration, with the accused currently out on bail.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism online and from various quarters, with many questioning the public celebration of an individual facing grave criminal charges. Police officials have stated that they are examining the viral videos and the circumstances surrounding the procession, including reports of flower showers and organized participation in the convoy.
