November 8: A Vrindavan-based religious preacher, Indradev Maharaj, has been booked following allegations of sexual assault, intimidation and exploitation by a woman who claims he abused her trust after she became his devotee.
A Zero FIR was registered against the preacher at Kashimira police station in Maharashtra’s Mira-Bhayandar area. The case has subsequently been transferred to Mathura police in Uttar Pradesh, where the alleged offences took place.
The allegations are yet to be established, and the police investigation is underway.
According to the complaint, the woman came in contact with Indradev in 2023 after watching his religious discourses online. She later attended a satsang in Santacruz, Mumbai, where she received diksha (spiritual initiation). She subsequently shared details of her personal and family problems with the preacher, who allegedly assured her that he could help resolve them.
The woman has alleged that during a visit to Sevadham Ashram in Vrindavan in December 2023, Indradev summoned her to his room late at night, shut the door and sexually assaulted her against her wishes.
She further alleged that Indradev Maharaj instructed her to tell anyone who enquired that she had gone to his room to collect medicine. Some accounts of the complaint also refer to allegations that CCTV cameras were switched off.
The woman has accused the preacher of subsequently subjecting her to further sexual exploitation through obscene video calls, including on WhatsApp. She alleged that he pressured her to undress during these calls and recorded intimate acts without her consent.
The complaint also refers to verbal abuse, including alleged derogatory remarks about her daughter, interference in her family affairs and threats to publicly humiliate her if she refused to comply with his demands.
A statement attributed to Indradev Maharaj in the complaint reportedly reads: “I am God, and you have to obey.”
The FIR invokes Sections 69, 75, 79 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), dealing with sexual intercourse through deceitful means, sexual harassment, acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation.
Another lustful priest of Vrindavan has been exposed. In Thane, Maharashtra, an FIR has been registered by a woman from Bihar against Indradev Maharaj, who delivers sermons in Vrindavan, for rape and making indecent calls. Vrindavan has become a den of adulterers, where one depraved person after another, dressed in saffron, commits misdeeds while preaching to people to renounce worldly attachment and illusion.

The woman had reportedly approached authorities in Mathura earlier but alleged that no effective action followed. The Zero FIR was registered after activist Trupti Desai, who heads the Bhumata Brigade, intervened and helped bring the complaint before the Maharashtra police.
At a press conference in Pune, Desai said other women had also come forward with allegations against the preacher. However, the reported case so far centres on the complaint filed by one woman. Desai has demanded Indradev’s arrest and a thorough investigation, including examination of possible evidence and statements from other potential complainants.

Preacher denies allegations
Indradev Maharaj has reportedly denied the charges, describing them as fabricated and baseless. He has also alleged that the accusations are part of an attempt to extort money and damage his reputation.
Audio clips purportedly linked to the case have also circulated, but their authenticity has not been independently established.
The allegations have prompted questions about the preacher’s religious affiliations and standing within the Hindu monastic establishment.

Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri has reportedly said that any action by the Niranjani Akhara or the wider Akhara Parishad would depend on the findings of the police investigation. He has indicated that the religious establishment does not support unethical conduct by those claiming spiritual authority.
The case has once again brought attention to the relationship between religious authority and the vulnerability of devotees who turn to spiritual figures for help with personal and family problems.
The police investigation will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, examine the digital evidence and verify the claims made by both sides. Indradev Maharaj remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless the charges are proved in court.
