Nirbhaya’s mother demands harsh punishment in Swati Maliwal case
Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, urged harsh punishment on Wednesday for those who harassed and assaulted Swati Maliwal, former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief, inside CM Kejriwal’s residence.
In an interview with IANS, Asha Devi discussed Maliwal’s battle against atrocities against women and grieved that the honorable woman who spoke up for the rights of other women was exposed to such heinous treatment by ‘those in power’.
“If Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal is not safe, then what can one expect of common women,” Asha Devi said.
She further stated that she knew Swati Maliwal personally, as the latter supported her in the Nirbhaya case and assisted numerous women in distress.

Asha Devi urged Kejriwal to take strict action
Asha Devi also urged Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to act promptly and take strict action against those who attacked Maliwal.
When questioned about the Kejriwal government’s ‘dilly-dally’ strategy to punishing the perpetrator, she said “The AAP rose to power in Delhi by capitalizing on people’s anger and outrage over the Nirbhaya case. Arvind Kejriwal claimed to be the son and brother of Delhi. It is time for him to walk the walk and demonstrate exemplary behavior.”
She also discussed the difficulties that inmates, particularly women, face in obtaining justice, as well as how criminals benefit from differences in jail manuals.
“The Tihar jail rulebook has no rights for female detainees. They are made to suffer because of the jail administration’s poorly drafted policies.”

She stated that the Chief Minister should focus on revising the jail handbook because cases are stuck in courts for many years, and criminals benefit the most from this.
She also stated that nothing has changed in the decade since the Nirbhaya incident, and that ordinary people must continue to run from pillar to post in order to obtain justice.
Arvind Kejriwal wants ‘fair’ investigation
Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal stated on Wednesday that he wants a fair probe into the alleged assault on the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal by his aide Bibhav Kumar.
Speaking to the news agency PTI, Kejriwal stated that the case is still “sub-judice” and that his comments could have an impact on the proceedings.
“But I expect a fair investigation. Justice should be served. There are two versions of the event. Police should investigate both stories fairly, and justice should be served,” he said.
