With the family protesting against Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim Governor, the controversy could become a political liability for the BJP ahead of the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections.

October 14: With Rahul Gandhi throwing his weight behind Ankita Bhandari’s parents’ demand for justice, the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam as Sikkim Governor could emerge as a major political liability for the party in Uttarakhand ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The protest at India Gate on Wednesday has given a fresh national dimension to a murder case that has refused to fade from public memory. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Ankita’s parents as they demanded that Gautam’s appointment be put on hold until the CBI completes its investigation into the alleged VIP angle in their daughter’s murder.
For the BJP, the danger lies in the convergence of three developments: the family’s continuing demand for justice, the elevation of a party leader whose name has figured in allegations that remain unproven, and Rahul Gandhi’s decision to make the issue a national political concern just months before Uttarakhand votes.
The controversy could give Congress a powerful campaign issue centred on women’s safety, political accountability and the perception that influential people receive preferential treatment. Whether it translates into electoral damage will depend on how the investigation progresses and whether the opposition can sustain public attention.
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention changes the political stakes
Until now, the Ankita Bhandari case has remained an enduring controversy in Uttarakhand, periodically returning to the political foreground whenever questions arise about the alleged VIP connection.
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention raises the stakes by bringing the family’s demand directly into the national political arena. His presence alongside Ankita’s parents makes it harder for the BJP to dismiss the latest protests as merely a confrontation between the state Congress unit and the ruling party.
The immediate demand is specific: the family wants President Droupadi Murmu to intervene and ensure that Gautam’s appointment is put on hold until the CBI investigation is completed.
For Congress, the issue offers an opportunity to connect a deeply emotive case to a wider argument about the accountability of those in positions of power. It also gives Rahul Gandhi a platform to question the BJP’s political judgment without having to establish the guilt of an individual against whom the allegations remain unproven.
That distinction is important. Gautam has denied the allegations and has not been named as an accused in the murder chargesheet. The political controversy concerns the appointment and the unresolved questions raised by the family, not any established finding of criminal guilt against him.
Why the governor appointment could backfire
The appointment has created a difficult political optics problem for the BJP. At a time when Ankita’s parents are demanding answers about the alleged VIP connection, the elevation of a leader they have publicly identified has revived suspicions and questions that the party would prefer to see resolved.
The opposition’s argument is likely to be straightforward: why should the appointment proceed without first addressing the family’s concerns through a credible investigation?
That argument does not establish wrongdoing, and the appointment itself is not evidence of a cover-up. But in electoral politics, the perception of how a government responds to a victim’s family can become as politically consequential as its formal defence of its actions.
Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal has already described Gautam’s appointment as hurtful to the sentiments of the state’s people and questioned its timing. The state Congress unit protested against the appointment in Dehradun on Tuesday, a day before Rahul and Priyanka met the family at India Gate.
Rahul Gandhi’s involvement now gives that state-level campaign a national platform.

The unresolved VIP question
Ankita, 19, was working as a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district when she was murdered in September 2022. Resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya, and co-accused Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2025.
The convictions were a significant development, but they did not settle the separate controversy over the alleged VIP guest and whether anyone else had a role in the circumstances surrounding Ankita’s death.
The issue returned to prominence after audio and video clips circulated alleging a connection between Gautam and the alleged VIP. Gautam has denied the claims. An FIR was registered against an unidentified VIP, and the CBI investigation has become the focus of renewed demands for transparency.
Ankita’s parents have questioned the pace and direction of the investigation. Their protest is therefore not simply about an appointment: it is also an attempt to keep the demand for answers alive.
For the BJP, the longer the uncertainty persists, the greater the risk that the case will be framed by its opponents as an example of unequal accountability. The party can point to the convictions of the three principal accused, but that may not fully answer the family’s concerns about the alleged VIP angle.
Women’s safety could become a campaign issue
The case carries a particular political sensitivity because it involves a young woman whose murder triggered widespread outrage and allegations of sexual exploitation.
Congress can use the continuing protest to question the BJP’s record on women’s safety and the treatment of victims’ families. The party is likely to argue that justice requires not only punishment for those convicted but also a transparent examination of any credible outstanding allegations.
The BJP, meanwhile, can argue that the criminal trial resulted in convictions and that unproven allegations should not determine an individual’s constitutional appointment. The political contest will turn partly on whether voters consider the existing investigation sufficient or believe that important questions remain unanswered.
The presence of Ankita’s parents at India Gate gives the issue a human dimension that political exchanges alone cannot easily displace. Their demand for justice, now backed publicly by the Congress leadership, could keep the case in the news through the run-up to the election.
A test for the BJP before the 2027 election
Uttarakhand is due to elect a new Assembly in 2027, making the timing particularly significant for the BJP. The Ankita Bhandari case could become a recurring issue in the campaign if the family’s demands remain unresolved.
The opposition will seek to link the controversy to broader questions of accountability, while the BJP will have to defend both its record in the murder case and the decision to appoint Gautam as governor.
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention does not automatically mean the issue will alter voting patterns. Electoral consequences will depend on whether the controversy resonates beyond politically engaged sections of the public, whether Congress can sustain its campaign and whether the CBI investigation produces credible answers.
But the political risk is clear: a case that the BJP might have hoped would recede after the convictions has returned to the centre of public debate at a sensitive moment. The governor appointment has provided the immediate trigger, while the family’s unresolved questions have given the controversy its emotional force.
With Rahul Gandhi now backing Ankita’s parents, the BJP faces the prospect of defending the appointment throughout the run-up to the Uttarakhand Assembly election. Unless the outstanding questions surrounding the alleged VIP connection are addressed credibly, the case could become one of the opposition’s most potent arguments on justice, women’s safety and political accountability in the state.
