‘Purification’ After Kharge Rally Sparks Caste Discrimination Row

The controversy centres on the meaning and intent of the ritual, with Congress alleging that Kharge’s Dalit identity prompted the ceremony, while BJP leaders maintain that it was conducted over alleged slogans at the rally that offended religious sentiments.

August 13, 2026: A political controversy has erupted over a reported ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification) ceremony at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground following a Congress rally addressed by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, with the Congress alleging caste prejudice and the BJP distancing itself from the event.

Kharge raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, saying a purification ritual was conducted at the venue after his August 8 rally. He said he had spoken about public issues without referring to caste or religion, yet the ceremony was held at the same site the following days.

Kharge described the episode as an insult to the Constitution and alleged that it amounted to the practice of untouchability against him. He said he wanted the matter to be treated as a political issue because of what he described as the discriminatory nature of the act.

Nadda rejects BJP link

Union minister and BJP leader JP Nadda condemned the reported incident as “very painful” and “very sad”, but rejected Kharge’s allegation that BJP workers were responsible.

Nadda said the BJP does not subscribe to such conduct and assured the House that the matter would be looked into. He also objected to the party continuing to be blamed after it had denied involvement and said it would investigate who organised the ceremony.

The controversy also drew intervention from the Rajya Sabha Chair, who said that an insult to Kharge would amount to an insult to the entire House. The Chair condemned the reported incident irrespective of the political affiliation of those responsible and said the persons involved should be identified and dealt with.

What happened at the Haldwani venue?

Kharge addressed a Congress rally at Ramlila Ground on August 8 as part of the party’s political preparations in Uttarakhand. Reports say members of the Shri Ram Sena subsequently conducted a shuddhikaran havan at the venue.

The organisation reportedly objected to slogans allegedly raised during the Congress programme and maintained that the Ramlila venue was a cultural and religious space that should not have been used for such political activity.

Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal, however, alleged that the ritual was conducted because Kharge is a Dalit and accused the BJP and associated organisations of encouraging caste divisions. He also questioned why police had not taken action.

The BJP has rejected the caste-based interpretation. Uttarakhand BJP spokesperson and minister Khajan Das said the ceremony had nothing to do with Kharge’s caste and claimed that slogans at the Congress rally had offended members of the Sanatan community.

What does ‘shuddhikaran’ mean?

Shuddhikaran comes from the Sanskrit word shuddhi, meaning purification or cleansing. In Hindu religious practice, purification rituals can be performed for people, objects, homes, temples or other spaces. The precise form varies considerably between traditions and circumstances.

A purification ceremony may involve mantras, a havan or fire ritual, and the sprinkling of consecrated water. In some traditions, sacred water such as Gangajal is used because it is regarded as ritually purifying.

The important point in the Haldwani controversy is therefore not that shuddhikaran itself is inherently an act of untouchability. Such rituals have legitimate religious meanings within Hindu traditions. The political dispute concerns why the ritual was performed at that particular venue, immediately after Kharge’s rally, and what the organisers intended it to signify.

If the ceremony was intended simply to ritually cleanse the venue after a political event, its proponents can portray it as a religious or cultural act. But if the venue was declared to require purification specifically because Kharge, a Dalit leader, had spoken there, that could carry a very different social meaning and explain the Congress’s allegation of caste discrimination.

The reported event therefore sits at the intersection of religious ritual, caste symbolism and political confrontation. The available accounts establish that a purification ceremony took place, but the competing political parties dispute its motive and whether it had anything to do with Kharge’s caste.

The episode has consequently widened the political confrontation between the Congress and BJP, with the dispute over the meaning and intent of the ceremony now spilling into Parliament.
