PM Modi who has always used Hindi even on International platforms and has been a strong advocate of the mother tongue suddenly switched to English during his speech on Pahalgam terror attack in Bihar. It was just not another speech. It was a stern warning and a serious message to the whole world.
Through his speech in English, he wanted to let the whole world understand clearly how badly India wants the terrorists and their backers to get punished. He really wanted the world to understand every single word clearly that he spoke about terrorism.
Addressing the rally in Bihar’s Madhubani district, PM Modi said, “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers”.
This marked PM Modi’s initial public response to the killing of 26 Indian citizens in Pahalgam on April 22.
Modi was giving a speech in Hindi when he transitioned to English, emphasizing each word to clarify India’s determination to hold accountable those responsible for the massacre of 26 individuals in Pahalgam, south Kashmir.
“Today from the soil of Bihar I say to the whole world. India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth,” said PM Modi, as he switched to English.
Though Modi’s powerful statement from the Hindi heartland was uncommon, he ensured that it was acknowledged worldwide by directing it to a global audience.
Nonetheless, this isn’t the first occasion PM Modi has employed English to communicate his message. He often blends English and Hindi during speeches in India, especially when speaking to international crowds or delivering messages to a worldwide audience.
According to experts, it has been believed that PM Modi is committed to take harshest action against the perpetrators of terror. It can be likened to the action that Israel has taken Hamas and has vowed to eradicate the terrorism to every bit.
PM Modi also stated that the terrorists and their backers will be brought to justice till the end of the earth. “We will pursue them to the ends of the earth. The spirit of India will never be broken by terrorism,” is what Modi stated precisely.
There have been previous stances which show that PM Modi has used English in his speeches to make everything he says clear to the world.
During his trip to Australia in June 2023, PM Modi spoke at the Federal Parliament in Canberra, giving a speech in English to present his vision for a more robust India-Australia partnership. He emphasized common democratic principles, economic collaboration, and regional safety in his address.
Recently, in September 2024, PM Modi gave his address in English at the United Nations ‘Summit of the Future’ in New York. In his address, the Indian Prime Minister emphasized worldwide issues such as climate change, digital governance, and sustainable development.
