Iranian state media has mocked Donald Trump over the secret aircraft switch during his departure from Turkey, portraying the unusual security operation as evidence of US vulnerability to Iranian threats.

August 14, 2026: Iranian state television has turned an extraordinary US security operation involving President Donald Trump into a propaganda spectacle, portraying his secret transfer between aircraft in Turkey as evidence of Washington’s fear of Tehran.

The episode came to light this week after reports revealed that Trump was secretly moved from Air Force One to a smaller US government aircraft through an airport catering truck during his departure from Ankara on July 8. The operation was triggered by what US officials described as a credible and potentially imminent missile threat amid heightened tensions with Iran.

On Thursday, Iran’s state television openly mocked Trump over the episode. A presenter described the incident as a new “scandal” for the US president and said it had become a source of humiliation for him. The broadcaster portrayed the covert aircraft change as evidence of the effectiveness of Iran’s military power.

The mocking was not confined to television. Iran’s embassy in South Africa amplified the story on X, posting a meme depicting Trump inside a catering container. The embassy contrasted Trump’s public emphasis on American military strength with his reported secret departure from Turkey in a food-service vehicle.

How the secret operation unfolded

Trump had attended the NATO summit in Ankara and initially appeared to board an older Air Force One for his departure. US officials, however, had received intelligence suggesting that the presidential aircraft could face a shoulder-fired missile attack.

The Secret Service subsequently devised a deception operation. Trump and a small group of aides were moved across the airport in a catering truck and transferred to a smaller C-32A military aircraft. The older Air Force One then departed separately with senior administration officials, White House personnel and members of the travelling press corps, effectively serving as a decoy.

Journalists aboard the aircraft were reportedly unaware that Trump had already left. They were instructed to keep the window shades closed, adding to the unusual secrecy surrounding the flight.

Trump later confirmed that the plane switch had taken place on the advice of the Secret Service. He also said that the smaller aircraft he eventually travelled on could arguably have been at greater risk because an attacker might have assumed that was carrying him.

Iran uses the episode to project strength

Iranian state media has presented the operation from a very different perspective. Rather than focusing on the US security rationale, the coverage has emphasised the image of an American president being secretly moved through an airport in a catering vehicle.

The narrative fits into Tehran’s broader information campaign portraying the United States as vulnerable despite its superior conventional military capabilities. The “food truck” imagery provides an especially striking contrast with Trump’s repeated emphasis on US military power.

The embassy in South Africa took the mockery further, using social media to contrast Trump’s claims about American warships and B-2 bombers with the reported covert escape from the presidential aircraft.

Threat behind the switch remains disputed

US officials have said the operation followed intelligence indicating a credible threat to Trump. According to reporting, the concern included the possibility of a shoulder-fired missile attack and intelligence suggesting that Iranian operatives had knowledge of Trump’s whereabouts in Ankara.

The precise nature and reliability of the intelligence remain unclear. Reuters reported that one account indicated there was an intention to target Trump but no clearly developed operational plan, which allowed the aircraft to proceed under the security measures adopted by the Secret Service.

Tehran has not officially acknowledged involvement in any such plot, and the Iranian government’s formal position remains separate from the mockery carried by its state media and diplomatic social-media accounts.

The incident has consequently become more than a presidential-security story. In the increasingly hostile US-Iran relationship, the unusual aircraft switch has become a potent piece of information warfare, with Washington presenting it as a precaution taken to protect the president and Iranian media portraying it as evidence that American power has been forced onto the defensive.
