NEW DELHI/ September 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed India’s better-than-expected 7.8% economic growth in the April-June quarter, attributing the performance to the collective resolve and hard work of Indians while urging citizens to deepen the push for an Atmanirbhar Bharat by choosing domestic products, services and celebrations.
In a video message posted on Instagram from Kyrgyzstan, Modi congratulated the people of India and said the growth figure reflected the country’s collective strength.
“Many congratulations to the people of the country. 7.8% growth has filled the country with happiness. I congratulate the countrymen for their power of resolve, for their hard work; this is a reflection of collective strength,” he said.

Modi said the performance was particularly significant against the backdrop of global instability, disrupted supply chains and continuing geopolitical conflicts.
“The world is drowned in war. There is news of war all around. The world is surrounded by crises. The supply chain is completely disturbed. From the Covid era in 2020 till today, stability is not visible anywhere. Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” he said.

Official data released on Monday showed the Indian economy expanded 7.8% in the first quarter of the financial year, exceeding expectations and highlighting the resilience of domestic growth amid geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict, and broader global uncertainty.
Using the strong growth numbers to renew his appeal for greater economic self-reliance, Modi urged citizens to cut back on non-essential spending overseas and redirect consumption towards India.
He asked people to avoid foreign tourism where possible, discourage overseas destination weddings and refrain from buying gold unless necessary. “Don’t travel to foreign countries for tourism. Avoid organising destination weddings in foreign countries. We should live by the mantra of ‘Wed in India’. Avoid buying gold if it’s not necessary,” he said.
Modi also called for greater preference for Indian products and services, arguing that stronger domestic demand would contribute to the country’s economic momentum.
“If we continue to emphasise self-reliance, I have full faith that when we reach 100 years of independence, we will hand over a developed India to our youth,” he said.
He linked the appeal to his broader vision of a Viksit Bharat, saying sustained growth would depend on collective effort.
“We will realise the dreams of our youth today through our hard work. Our policy is right. Our intention is clear. And the power of 140 crore countrymen today, united, is taking the country to new heights,” Modi said.
The appeal echoes a broader campaign Modi has pushed in recent months to encourage domestic consumption and reduce avoidable pressure on foreign exchange. In May, he had urged citizens to limit unnecessary foreign travel and overseas weddings, conserve fuel, use public transport and electric vehicles, avoid non-essential gold purchases and opt for Made-in-India products amid global supply-chain disruptions.
