Mahatama Gandhi’s statue vandalised in Italy by Khalistani extremists
Khalistani radicals vandalised a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Italy on Wednesday, barely hours after it was inaugurated. The accused additionally inscribed controversial slogans about Khalisatni terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar at the bottom of the bust.
Following the incident, local authorities stated that the area was cleaned up in “record time”.
The incident occurred just days before the G7 summit, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also attend.

50th G7 Summit to be held in Italy
On January 1, 2024, Italy took the G7 Presidency for the seventh time, preparing to host the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, from June 13 to 15. The event will bring together leaders from the G7 member countries—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—as well as delegates from the European Union.
Italy has also invited several states and international organizations to the Outreach Session of the summit. This will mark India’s 11th participation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending for the fifth time.
India has participated in 10 G7 Outreach Sessions, beginning in 2003 in France and progressing through host nations such as the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy, France, and, most recently, Germany (2022) and Japan (2023). Indian participation has consistently been at the Prime Minister level, demonstrating the country’s strong commitment to the summit’s objectives.

Speaking about the incident, Foreign Secretary Kwatra stated that the Indian authorities brought up the issue of Mahatma Gandhi’s status being vandalised with Italian officials.
“I have raised the problem of vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with the Italian authorities. “Necessary action has been taken,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
In a similar incident last year, Khalistan radicals vandalised a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on a university campus in British Columbia, Canada.
