Actor Karisma Kapoor has revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes detail about the making of the 1997 blockbuster Dil To Pagal Hai. According to the actress, several leading Bollywood stars turned down the role of Nisha because they were reluctant to share screen space with Madhuri Dixit, who was widely regarded as one of the industry’s finest dancers.
Karisma Kapoor Opens Up About Joining Dil To Pagal Hai
During a recent interaction with India Today, Karisma Kapoor spoke about accepting the role at a time when many actresses reportedly declined the opportunity.
“When Dil To Pagal Hai was being made, no actress wanted to do the role opposite Madhuri. Nobody wanted to dance with her and compete with her in a dance face-off,” Karisma said.
Madhuri Dixit’s exceptional dancing skills and commanding screen presence made her one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, leading many actresses to hesitate before taking on a role that involved sharing major dance sequences with her.
Why Nisha’s Character Was Different
Reflecting on her character Nisha, Karisma explained why the role stood out from traditional Bollywood heroines.
“I think cinema changed with Nisha’s character. She was a heroine, but not the conventional one. She was the one whom the hero did not love. He was rejecting her, and the audience could actually see her pain,” she said.
Karisma added that the emotional depth of the character made the role both challenging and rewarding.
“Even today, I get goosebumps thinking about it because, normally, the hero is supposed to love the heroine. Here was a girl wondering why the man she loved did not feel the same way. That emotional journey was very special,” she shared.
