The INDIA bloc displayed unusual cohesion as leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Arvind Kejriwal condemned the attack and called for immediate action against those responsible, framing it as an assault on democratic values.

May 30, 2026: A political storm erupted in West Bengal after the alleged assault on Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, with Opposition leaders across the INDIA bloc launching a coordinated wave of condemnation and briefly setting aside internal differences.
The incident occurred when Abhishek Banerjee, widely seen as the second-most powerful figure in the Trinamool Congress, visited the area to meet families affected by post-poll violence. During the visit, he was reportedly surrounded by a mob, shoved, slapped, and attacked with eggs and stones while moving through a crowd. Videos circulating on social media showed him wearing a protective helmet as his security personnel struggled to escort him to safety amid chaotic scenes.

The attack quickly escalated into a national political flashpoint, with his aunt and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launching a sharp and emotional attack on the ruling establishment. Reacting to the incident, she said, “Rulers became killers,” and further escalated her criticism, adding, “RULERS BECAME KILLERS—shame on you, BJP.” The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and insisting that the incident reflects local anger against the Trinamool Congress.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi issued a detailed post on X condemning the violence and describing it as an attack not just on an individual but on democratic institutions themselves. He wrote that the assault on Abhishek Banerjee was “utterly reprehensible” and added that an attack on a Member of Parliament is “not merely an assault on one individual—it is an assault on the very people who elected him.” He further accused what he termed the “BJP’s politics of revenge” and urged both the central and West Bengal governments to take immediate action against the perpetrators while ensuring the safety of all public representatives.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also reacted strongly, describing the incident as a “heinous conspiracy” and accusing the ruling party of fostering a climate of political violence. In his statement, he said the attack reflected an “anarchic” political culture that thrives on “hateful and violent politics,” warning that such incidents threaten democratic norms and public trust in governance.
Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav issued one of the most forceful reactions, directly alleging that the attack was politically sponsored and condemning what he described as a growing pattern of violence under those in power. In his post on X, he termed the incident “cowardly” and “alarming,” stating that it was “sponsored by the BJP’s government” and reflected the influence of “people in power with criminal tendencies.” He further stressed that democracy requires space for dissent and ideological differences, warning that replacing dialogue with violence poses a serious threat to democratic values. Tejashwi Yadav also questioned accountability, asking from whom immediate legal action could be expected, and challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly condemn the incident.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned the attack, highlighting what he described as a failure of law and order and inadequate protection for Opposition leaders visiting sensitive areas. He said the incident raised serious concerns about administrative responsibility and the safety of elected representatives.
Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal similarly condemned the violence, stating that the incident reflected a “deeply worrying breakdown of law and order” in West Bengal. He warned that the growing hostility towards political outreach could further erode democratic engagement and public trust in governance.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, rejected all allegations of involvement, stating that there was no organisational role in the incident. Party leaders maintained that the violence was the result of public anger against the Trinamool Congress’s long tenure in power and accused the Opposition of attempting to politicise a localised incident.
Despite political differences within the INDIA bloc, the Sonarpur incident has triggered an unusually coordinated response from Opposition parties, with leaders from Congress, RJD, SP, and AAP largely aligning in their condemnation of the attack and their criticism of the ruling establishment.
The episode has once again placed West Bengal at the centre of national political attention, raising broader questions about political violence, accountability, and the limits of democratic engagement in an increasingly polarised environment. Whether this moment of Opposition unity will extend beyond this crisis, however, remains uncertain.
