New Delhi/ October 29: Opposition parties have recast their planned protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as a “People’s Impeachment” (Jan Mahabhiyog), abandoning the idea of a mock parliamentary session amid concerns that it could invite allegations of contempt of Parliament.
The event will be held on Friday at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, where opposition leaders plan to present their case for the CEC’s impeachment outside the formal parliamentary framework.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will preside over the proceedings, assisted by a Samajwadi Party MP whose name is yet to be finalised. INDIA bloc leaders met on Thursday to settle the format and schedule.
The meeting was attended by Meira Kumar, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, Nasir Hussain, Manickam Tagore and Pawan Khera from the Congress, along with Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress, Mahua Maji of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Harendra Malik of the Samajwadi Party.
The session is scheduled to run from 3 pm to 7.30 pm. Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, will open the proceedings, while Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will deliver the concluding remarks.

Representatives of 19 political parties are expected to speak. Most will have five minutes each, while the Samajwadi Party and the Trinamool Congress have been allotted ten minutes apiece. People whose names have allegedly been deleted from electoral rolls and three civil society representatives will also address the gathering, taking the total number of speakers to around 30.

The central issue will be the deletion of names from electoral rolls. The Election Commission has put the number of affected electors at 13.5 crore, while the Congress claims the figure has risen to 16.5 crore.
INDIA bloc to livestream proceedings
The INDIA bloc plans to livestream the event on YouTube and other social media platforms. The programme will conclude with the national anthem.
By shifting from a mock parliamentary format to a public campaign, the opposition hopes to intensify its challenge to the Election Commission while avoiding a format that could be portrayed as an imitation of formal parliamentary proceedings.
