Aopril 24, 2026: Manipur Police have arrested 12 individuals for allegedly violating prohibitory orders and disrupting public order in Thoubal district amid ongoing enforcement of curfew restrictions.Following a magistrate’s order, the accused have been sentenced to one week of community service.
The arrests were made on Friday as authorities continued efforts to maintain peace and enforce restrictions in sensitive areas of the district.
As part of the directive, the individuals have been assigned to clean and maintain the Khongjom War Memorial site after a state function held there. Officials said the measure is intended to serve both as a punitive step and a constructive contribution to a site of historical and cultural significance.
The Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal district is a prominent landmark commemorating Manipuri warriors who fought in the final battle of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The site is known for housing the world’s tallest sword statue and is widely regarded as a symbol of regional pride and patriotism.

Thoubal district has witnessed heightened tensions in recent weeks. On April 21, a government event in Wangjing was disrupted by protesters who blocked roads and attempted to approach the venue, prompting security intervention. The Chief Minister, who was scheduled to inaugurate a Block Development Office, was later evacuated by helicopter amid the unrest. Security forces reportedly used controlled measures to disperse the crowd, and one person was injured.

Authorities said the latest community service order reflects a broader approach combining enforcement with corrective action to discourage violations while promoting civic responsibility. Officials have urged residents to comply with prohibitory orders and cooperate with security forces to restore normalcy in the district.
The identities of the 12 arrested individuals have not been publicly released.
In a similar case in June 2025 (Imphal East), police detained 19 youths for creating public nuisance during curfew hours, including blocking roads, harassing commuters, and throwing stones at security forces in Lamlong Bazar. They were made to publicly apologise by holding their ears and were assigned community service tasks such as cleaning roads and clearing debris in the area. Most of those detained were students or first-time offenders and were later released on good behaviour bonds.
