The deceased, Vineet Singh of Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district, was attached to the CRPF’s 112 Battalion and was training with C/122 Company. Authorities said the motive behind the alleged suicide remains unknown.

The deceased was identified as Vineet Singh, a native of Purvabajirao village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district. He belonged to the F/112 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and was undergoing pre-induction training with C/122 Company at the force’s camp in Motbung, which falls under the Sapermeina Police Station area.
Officials said the incident occurred at around 8 a.m. Preliminary findings suggest that Singh allegedly used his issued INSAS rifle to inflict a fatal gunshot injury beneath his chin while inside the camp premises.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and other statutory procedures, while investigators are recording statements and collecting evidence to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident. Authorities said the reason behind the alleged suicide has not yet been established.
The death has occurred amid an extensive security deployment in Manipur, where central forces continue to play a crucial role in maintaining law and order following more than three years of ethnic unrest. The Manipur Police Administrative Report (2025-26) states that over 300 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are deployed across the state. These include 206 companies of the CRPF, 100 companies of the Border Security Force (BSF), 21 units of the Assam Rifles, six companies of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and five companies of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), besides personnel from the Army and the Manipur Police.
The Centre further reinforced the security grid in June by deploying two battalions of the CRPF’s specialised Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA). The elite units have been tasked with counter-insurgency operations, recovery of looted firearms, demolition of illegal fortified positions, and securing sensitive pockets across the state.
Manipur has remained deeply fractured since ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Although large-scale clashes have reduced, sporadic violence and inter-community tensions continue to surface. More recently, strains have also emerged between Kuki-Zo and Tangkhul Naga groups in parts of Ukhrul district. Since the conflict began, nearly 260 people have lost their lives, while more than 60,000 residents have been displaced from their homes.
