Mirabai Chanu Leads India’s Gold Rush

Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu delivered another memorable performance by winning gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category. The victory marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title, further cementing her status as one of India’s greatest weightlifters.

Meanwhile, Sharmila Dhankar secured India’s second gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put event, highlighting the country’s growing strength in para athletics.

Neeraj Chopra Headlines India’s Athletics Campaign

India’s athletics squad is led by Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who is aiming to reclaim the Commonwealth Games javelin title he won at Gold Coast 2018. Chopra missed the Birmingham 2022 Games due to injury and returns to Glasgow as one of India’s biggest medal hopes.

Other Indian athletes expected to challenge for podium finishes include Animesh Kujur, Murali Sreeshankar, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Parul Chaudhary, and Gulveer Singh.

India’s Commonwealth Games Legacy

Before Glasgow 2026, India had accumulated 564 Commonwealth Games medals across 18 appearances, making the country the fourth-most successful nation in Commonwealth Games history, behind Australia, England, and Canada.

The nation’s best-ever performance came at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, where India won 101 medals, including 39 gold medals, and finished second in the overall standings.

At Birmingham 2022, India secured 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze) to finish fourth. However, Glasgow 2026 features a reduced sports programme, with disciplines such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and hockey absent from the schedule, impacting India’s traditional medal prospects.

Outlook for Team India at Glasgow 2026

With several medal events still to come, including boxing, athletics, and para sports, India remains well-positioned to add significantly to its medal tally. The performances of stars like Lovlina Borgohain and Neeraj Chopra could play a crucial role in boosting India’s standing on the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal table.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
