Social media erupted after the bridge’s unveiling, with netizens split between keeping the name “Chenab Rail Bridge” and renaming it after local heroes or cultural symbols.

The world’s tallest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, marking a historic moment as he flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra to Srinagar. However, the bridge—an engineering marvel standing as a steel arch over the Chenab River—has ignited a heated online debate over its name, with netizens expressing divergent views on social media platforms like X.

The 1.3-km-long bridge, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, was hailed by PM Modi as a “symbol of connectivity and progress for Jammu and Kashmir.”

During the inauguration, he stated, “The Chenab Rail Bridge is not just an engineering feat but a testament to India’s resolve to bring development to every corner of the nation.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this sentiment, tweeting, “Today, Modiji’s dedication of the world’s tallest railway arch bridge ‘Chenab Rail Bridge’ to the people is a reflection of our resolve towards the development of Jammu and Kashmir. This steel arch bridge built on the Chenab River is a living symbol.”

The Chenab Bridge is in Jammu region, so why name it after Kashmiris? Sheikh Abdullah jailed Pandit Prem Nath Dogra, an anti-democratic act. Why ignore Brigadier Rajinder Singh, a Jammu hero who saved J&K, from the same region as the bridge? #ChenabBridge https://t.co/3oCPSPBvm0

Despite the official name, “Chenab Rail Bridge,” posts on X reveal a growing controversy among netizens, with some advocating for alternative names that reflect cultural or historical significance.

One user argued, “Why not name it after a local hero or deity? Chenab Rail Bridge sounds too generic for such a monumental structure.” Another countered, “The name is fine—it reflects the geography and simplicity. Why complicate it with politics?” These divergent views have turned the bridge into a virtual battleground, with hashtags like #ChenabBridge and #NameTheBridge trending on X.

The bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed, surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower and forms a critical link in the 111-km Katra–Banihal section of the USBRL. Alongside the Chenab Bridge, PM Modi also inaugurated India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, Anji Khad, further boosting connectivity in the region. “These bridges are not just about steel and concrete; they connect hearts and aspirations,” Modi said, emphasizing their role in integrating Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India.

While the Vande Bharat Express, flagged off from Katra Railway Station, was celebrated for reducing travel time between Katra and Srinagar, the naming debate overshadowed some of the excitement. A user on X posted, “The #VandeBharat is a game-changer, but the bridge deserves a name that resonates with our heritage, not just a river.” Others defended the current name, with one writing, “Chenab is the soul of the region. The name is perfect and unites us.”

Railway officials have not commented on the naming controversy, focusing instead on the technical achievements. An Indian Railways spokesperson noted, “The Chenab Rail Bridge is designed to withstand earthquakes and extreme weather, ensuring safe and reliable travel for decades.”

As the Vande Bharat Express made its historic crossing over the Chenab Rail Bridge—captured in viral videos across social media—the naming debate shows no signs of slowing down. Whether the bridge retains its current name or sparks a formal renaming discussion remains to be seen, but for now, it stands as both an engineering triumph and a lightning rod for public discourse.
