April 25, 2026: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh on Saturday strongly criticised the defection of party Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP, terming the development unconstitutional and in violation of parliamentary norms.
He alleged that the manner in which the MPs joined the BJP breached constitutional provisions as well as the anti-defection law. “Seven individuals announced their decision to join the BJP in a way that is unconstitutional, illegal, and against established rules. This is entirely wrong in legal terms,” Singh said.
Referring to the anti-defection law, he added that any form of split or factional breakaway is not permitted in the Assembly, Rajya Sabha, or Lok Sabha, and lacks constitutional validity.
Reiterating his position, Singh said the MPs’ move was invalid and called for strict action. “The defection of these seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs is illegal, unconstitutional, and against parliamentary rules,” he said.
He also announced that he would raise the matter with the Rajya Sabha Chairman. “I will write to the Hon’ble Vice President, who is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, citing all relevant rules and requesting the termination of the membership of these seven MPs,” Singh said.

Singh further claimed that some of the MPs had been seen interacting with BJP leaders prior to their formal induction. “At least three of them were seen visiting the BJP office yesterday,” he added.
The remarks come after a major setback for AAP, as several of its Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha—who had earlier been removed as the party’s deputy leader in the Upper House—joined the BJP on Friday. Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Chadha announced that two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha members would merge with the BJP, formalising a split that had been brewing for weeks.
The political row intensified further as Singh sharpened his attack on the BJP over the ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ controversy involving AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Singh dubbed the BJP the “Bharatiya Jhootha Party” and accused Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Verma of circulating “fake” images to target Kejriwal.

Rejecting the visuals presented by Verma, Singh described them as “completely fake, false and baseless” and warned of defamation action against both the BJP leader and television channels airing them. “By spreading fabricated images and misinformation, they are resorting to their usual propaganda tactics,” he said.
Earlier, Verma had launched a sharp attack on Kejriwal, alleging that he had built a second “Sheesh Mahal” and was living a luxurious lifestyle contrary to his earlier claims of simplicity. He cited Kejriwal’s recent move to a government bungalow at 95 Lodhi Estate and showcased visuals he claimed were from the residence.
AAP leaders, however, rejected the allegations outright. Singh reiterated that the images were fabricated and challenged BJP leaders, along with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, to open their residences for public scrutiny, saying Kejriwal would do the same.
Delhi minister Atishi also dismissed the claims, alleging that the visuals were sourced online and not from Kejriwal’s residence. In a post on X, she accused the BJP of presenting downloaded images as evidence and making baseless allegations in the absence of proof.
The developments have triggered a sharp war of words between the two parties, with AAP maintaining that the defections and the controversy reflect a broader pattern of political targeting, while the BJP has defended the MPs’ move as a natural political shift and intensified its criticism of the AAP leadership.
