Actress Kriti Sanon has revealed that she decided to freeze her eggs while preparing for her 2021 film Mimi, calling it one of the smartest and most empowering decisions she has made. The actor shared that the film’s shooting schedule and her physical transformation for the role made it the ideal time to undergo the fertility preservation procedure.
Speaking on Karishma Mehta’s podcast, Kriti said she is opening up about the experience publicly for the first time and hopes more women are informed about their reproductive choices.
Why Kriti Sanon chose to freeze her eggs during Mimi
For Mimi, Kriti had to gain a significant amount of weight to portray a surrogate mother. During a two-month break from filming, she decided to undergo egg freezing.
“I froze my eggs. Very smartly, I did it during that time when I had to gain weight for Mimi. I spoke to someone who told me this is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you can. It’s the best gift you can give yourself,” Kriti said.
She explained that since she was already focused on gaining weight for the film and had no shooting commitments during the break, it was the most convenient time to complete the procedure.
Kriti Sanon recalls the emotional effects of hormone treatment
The actor also spoke candidly about the physical and emotional challenges she experienced during the process.
According to Kriti, the hormone injections caused noticeable mood swings and hormonal changes.
“There comes a point when you feel hormonally disrupted. Almost like a pregnant woman, your mood swings go off the charts,” she shared.
Despite the temporary discomfort, Kriti said she has no regrets and is happy she made the decision at a younger age.
At what age is egg freezing considered ideal? Fertility experts explain
Kriti Sanon revealed that she froze her eggs when she was around 29 years old—an age many fertility specialists consider favourable for fertility preservation.
According to Dr. Rita Modi, Senior IVF Consultant at Motherhood Fertility and IVF, Navi Mumbai, women in their late 20s often have better egg quality and ovarian reserve, which can improve the chances of retrieving healthy eggs.
However, she emphasised that the decision should not be based solely on age.
Instead, factors such as overall health, reproductive goals, and medical history should be discussed with a fertility specialist before proceeding.
Does body weight affect egg freezing?
Kriti’s revelation also sparked curiosity about whether gaining weight influences egg freezing success. Fertility experts clarify that the objective is not to gain weight but to maintain a healthy body weight before treatment.
Dr. Rita Modi explained that being underweight or overweight may affect hormone balance, ovarian response to stimulation, egg quality, and even the safety of the procedure.
She recommends maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and addressing any underlying medical conditions to optimise treatment outcomes.

Why early fertility planning can improve future reproductive options
Dr. Sandeep Talwar, Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Delhi, said women aged 29–30 generally have a favourable ovarian reserve, increasing the likelihood of retrieving good-quality eggs in a single stimulation cycle.
He advised women considering egg freezing to first undergo fertility assessments, including ovarian reserve testing and ultrasound scans, so treatment can be tailored to their individual needs.
Experts also note that although egg freezing does not guarantee a future pregnancy, preserving eggs at a younger age—when egg quality is typically higher—can significantly expand reproductive options later in life.
Kriti Sanon’s candid disclosure has once again brought attention to fertility preservation, encouraging conversations around reproductive health, family planning, and the importance of making informed decisions based on medical advice rather than social expectations.
