UN urges restraint amid fear of massive war

World powers urged restraint on Sunday over fears that Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attacks on Israel could spark a wider war in the Middle East, as the United Nations heard calls for new sanctions against Tehran.

The Middle East is in danger of a full-scale direct battle between Iran and Israel, thus the UN has urged both countries to exercise prudence.

Following two weeks of reciprocal airstrikes on each other, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned the adversaries not to further raise tensions in the region by carrying out additional attacks during an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on Sunday. In retaliation for a deadly airstrike widely blamed on Israel that destroyed Tehran’s consular building in the Syrian capital earlier this month, Iran launched the first attack directly targeting Israeli territory.

The attacks pushed tensions in the Middle East to a dangerous new level, six months after deadly clashes broke out in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, sparking international concern.

“Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the body’s Security Council during a meeting to discuss Saturday’s Iranian attack. “The Middle East is on the brink,” he warned. “The people of the region face the real threat of devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to calm and de-escalate tensions.”

Late on Saturday, Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel. Regular conflicts between Israel and Iran’s regional allies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, have been brought on by the Gaza War.

The direct attack was a significant escalation and was in retribution for an attack on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria on April 1st, which Israel has not yet acknowledged.

The Israeli military said Israel and its allies intercepted the vast majority of the more than 300 incoming projectiles, with 12 reported injuries and no deaths, but the attack increasingly raised fears of an Israeli retaliatory attack. Increased.
