New Delhi, June 10: In a major setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the party and her parliamentary seat on Wednesday, becoming the second Trinamool Rajya Sabha member to quit within days amid mounting turmoil inside the Mamata Banerjee-led outfit.
In a brief letter addressed to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, Dev announced her resignation from the Upper House with immediate effect.
“I do hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect,” she wrote.
The resignation triggered intense political speculation after photographs and videos surfaced showing Dev meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shortly after stepping down. When asked by reporters whether her next political move was linked to Assam politics, Dev responded cryptically: “There’s only Assam connection.”
A former Congress leader, Dev joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after ending a long association with the Congress party. The daughter of veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, she had represented Assam’s Silchar constituency in the Lok Sabha and previously served as president of the All India Mahila Congress.

Her departure comes just two days after senior Trinamool leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned from both the party and Parliament, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s direction following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal.
Crisis Deepens Inside Trinamool
The twin resignations have intensified concerns over growing instability within the Trinamool Congress following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

The developments come on the heels of an unprecedented rebellion within the party’s legislative wing. As many as 58 Trinamool MLAs reportedly defied the party leadership and backed Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of Leader of the Opposition, rejecting the party’s official nominee, Shovandeb Chattopadhyay.

The revolt culminated in the Assembly Speaker recognising Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition, exposing deep divisions within the party and raising questions about the leadership’s control over its legislators.
Political observers say the back-to-back resignations of two Rajya Sabha MPs, coupled with the rebellion among MLAs, point to widening cracks within the organisation at a time when the opposition INDIA bloc is already facing challenges in maintaining unity.
With Sushmita Dev’s next political move now under intense scrutiny, her meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to fuel speculation about a possible shift in allegiance, potentially adding another chapter to the rapidly unfolding political crisis within the Trinamool Congress.
