Actress Nimrat Kaur once shared her tragic experience of losing her father, Major Bhupender Singh, due to a terrorist attack. In her post regarding the brutal Pahalgam terrorist attack from last month, Kaur referred to herself as a ‘martyr’s daughter’. In an old interview which has gone viral now, the actor remembered the winter of 1994 when her father was abducted in the Valley and ‘eliminated’.
In the interview with ETimes, Nimrat told that her father was a young army major, an engineer posted on the border roads of the army in a place called Verinag. She said that Kashmir wasn’t a family resort, so we stayed in Patiala while he traveled to Kashmir.
Her father was killed by terror group ‘Hizb-ul-Mujahideen’
Kaur, recognized for her roles in films like ‘The Lunchbox’, ‘Dasvi’, and ‘Airlift’, among others, revealed that the terrorists had some ‘ridiculous demands’ that were impossible to meet. The actor disclosed that the militant group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was accountable for the assault.
“We were on our winter vacation in January 1994 and visiting our father in Kashmir, when the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen kidnapped him from his place of work and, after seven days, terminated him. They had made some ridiculous demands of some terrorists to be released that he obviously did not agree to. He was just 44 when he died. We got the news and flew back with his body to Delhi, and I saw his body for the first time only in Delhi,” she explained.
Kaur resolved to never go back to the Valley. Nevertheless, it was following the exclusive screening of ‘The Lunchbox’ at Cannes that she ultimately visited the Valley and spent a few days in Verinag seeking some closure.
Nimrat appreciated Army’s efforts in standing with her family
The 43-year-old also valued the army’s commitment to continually supporting the family of a martyr. In the same interview, she stated, “But, the army stands by you like a rock. They are your family, and even today, they will come at the drop of a hat if you need something, and they will do anything for you. I also think it’s to do with my father’s goodwill and his relationship with people.”
Kaur’s father was honored posthumously with the Shaurya Chakra, which is India’s award for civilian and military bravery. The honor was bestowed upon him on March 13, which is the actor’s birthday.
She is alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Anushka Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Gul Panag, Neha Dhupia, Preity Zinta, and Arjun Rampal, among other Indian film stars who come from army background.
