Kuki organizations have called for a Manipur bandh on December 5 to coincide with the funeral of 12 Kuki-Zo men, including 10 suspected militants killed in a gunfight with the CRPF in Jiribam district. The bandh carries the potential for unrest as residents in Meitei-dominated areas in the plains are likely to defy the call.
The funeral, organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), will take place at Peace Ground in Tuibuong, Churachandpur. The ITLF, which confirmed the date after an emergency meeting, stated that post-mortem reports have met satisfactory standards according to forensic and legal experts. They also emphasized their commitment to pursuing legal action regarding the deceased.
The event will include a silent rally, with students and participants holding placards and banners to honor the victims. The ITLF has declared a state-wide shutdown in solidarity with the occasion, urging widespread public participation.
Last Tuesday, Kuki organizations held a ‘coffin rally’ in Churachandpur to pay tribute to the lives lost in the alleged gunfight.
In a related development, Manipur Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh visited Jakuradhor Karong in the Jiribam district on Saturday. Arriving by chopper from Imphal, Singh inspected locations linked to the incident and interacted with displaced villagers at a relief camp set up at Borobekra Police Station.
