Tangkhul Naga organisations have accused the Kuki National Army (Burma) (KNA-B) of unleashing what they described as a “reign of terror” in the border areas of Manipur’s Kamjong district, alleging that the group was responsible for a series of arson attacks on civilian homes.

May 6, 2026L: Tensions escalated in Manipur’s hill districts in the early hours of May 7 after suspected militants launched coordinated attacks on villages along the Myanmar frontier, triggering panic and causing widespread damage.

According to sources, the incidents took place around 2 am in Namlee Market and Choro village under Kamjong district. The attackers are suspected to have crossed over from Myanmar. Local media inputs also suggested the possible use of drones, raising fresh concerns over the growing sophistication of militant tactics in the conflict-hit border terrain.

Several houses were reportedly set ablaze during the assault.

The fact that the targeted villages belong to the Tangkhul Naga community has triggered speculation about the suspected involvement of the Kuki National Army (Burma) in the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (TAKL), the Southern Tangkhul Students’ Union, issued a strongly worded statement on May 7, 2026, condemning what it described as a “cross-border invasion” of Tangkhul Naga villages by KNA-B militants.

In its statement released from Irong, TAKL alleged that around 4:00 am on May 7, nearly 100 armed KNA-B militants crossed the Indo-Myanmar international border and carried out coordinated attacks on multiple villages in Kamjong district, including Namlee, Wanglee, Ashang Khullen (KAKA), and Aloyo (Choro).

The students’ body claimed the attackers used sophisticated weapons, fired indiscriminately from several directions, and set fire to multiple houses, forcing women, children, and elderly residents to flee into nearby forests for safety.

TAKL also raised concerns over the timing of the attack, noting that Central Security Forces had visited the same areas just a day earlier. It accused security forces of failing to safeguard border villages and alleged that the local Tangkhul Naga community has “completely lost trust and confidence” in them, further claiming possible facilitation of movement by “Kuki narco-terrorists.”

Key demands raised by TAKL:

  • Immediate deployment of Manipur State Police and commandos to the affected villages, stating they “trust only state forces” for protection of their ancestral land
  • A transparent investigation into how a large group of armed militants allegedly crossed the international border undetected
  • Urgent relief, safety, and rehabilitation for displaced villagers currently taking shelter in forests
  • Priority protection of indigenous border communities over political considerations

The TAKL warned that it “will not tolerate continued victimisation” of Tangkhul border residents.

The latest exchange of allegations comes amid heightened tensions in the Kamjong–Ukhrul border region, where both communities have reported arson and displacement incidents between May 6–7, 2026. Security agencies have yet to issue an official confirmation regarding the sequence of events or the identity of those involved.

The Kuki National Army (Burma), commonly referred to as KNA-B, is an ethnic armed group operating mainly in Myanmar’s Chin State and adjoining areas along the India–Myanmar border. It is associated with sections of the Kuki community and functions as one of several non-state armed actors in the region’s long-running ethnic conflict landscape. The group does not hold any official state recognition and operates within a complex web of shifting alliances and local power structures typical of Myanmar’s borderlands. Its activities are often reported in the context of broader instability in the frontier areas, where multiple armed organisations remain active and territorial control is fluid.

Security forces have been placed on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation. The full extent of damage and the identities of those involved are still under verification.

The latest flare-up comes amid continuing instability in Manipur’s sensitive border zones, where sporadic violence and armed confrontations have persisted over the past several months.

The attacks also follow a series of alleged incidents involving suspected Tangkhul militants, who are said to have carried out repeated attacks against Kuki-Zo villagers in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. Recently, Lanchah Kuki village in Kamjong district was reportedly set ablaze. Earlier, suspected militants had also burned Gampal and Haijang villages and carried out attacks on Kuki settlements, with reports of civilian deaths.

Kuki Inpi Condemns Violence, Alleges Targeted Attacks

Meanwhile, the Kuki Inpi Manipur has condemned the continued violence, alleging targeted attacks on Kuki-Zo communities and calling for immediate accountability and intervention.

In a statement, KIM  warned that repeated assaults and the destruction of civilian habitations risk further destabilising already fragile inter-community relations, urging authorities and civil society groups to respond decisively.

It also noted that the latest incident comes despite peace appeals issued by the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF), describing the timing as “deeply concerning” and counterproductive to reconciliation efforts.

Additionally, the Kuki Inpi expressed concern over reports that Kuki residents in Chassad and adjoining areas were being denied access to essential supplies by neighbouring communities, calling it a serious humanitarian issue that requires urgent attention.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the organisation said the Kuki community had exercised restraint despite repeated provocations, but cautioned that restraint should not be interpreted as weakness. It urged authorities to restore normalcy, ensure accountability, and prevent further escalation.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
