May 6, 2026L: Tensions escalated in Manipur’s hill districts in the early hours of May 7 after suspected militants launched coordinated attacks on villages along the Myanmar frontier, triggering panic and causing widespread damage.
According to sources, the incidents took place around 2 am in Namlee Market and Choro village under Kamjong district. The attackers are suspected to have crossed over from Myanmar. Local media inputs also suggested the possible use of drones, raising fresh concerns over the growing sophistication of militant tactics in the conflict-hit border terrain.
Several houses were reportedly set ablaze during the assault.
The fact that the targeted villages belong to the Tangkhul Naga community has triggered speculation about the suspected involvement of the Kuki National Army (Burma) in the attacks.

Security forces have been placed on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation. The full extent of damage and the identities of those involved are still under verification.
The latest flare-up comes amid continuing instability in Manipur’s sensitive border zones, where sporadic violence and armed confrontations have persisted over the past several months.
The attacks also follow a series of alleged incidents involving suspected Tangkhul militants, who are said to have carried out repeated attacks against Kuki-Zo villagers in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. Recently, Lanchah Kuki village in Kamjong district was reportedly set ablaze. Earlier, suspected militants had also burned Gampal and Haijang villages and carried out attacks on Kuki settlements, with reports of civilian deaths.
Kuki Inpi Condemns Violence, Alleges Targeted Attacks
Meanwhile, the Kuki Inpi Manipur has condemned the continued violence, alleging targeted attacks on Kuki-Zo communities and calling for immediate accountability and intervention.
In a statement, KIM warned that repeated assaults and the destruction of civilian habitations risk further destabilising already fragile inter-community relations, urging authorities and civil society groups to respond decisively.
It also noted that the latest incident comes despite peace appeals issued by the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF), describing the timing as “deeply concerning” and counterproductive to reconciliation efforts.
Additionally, the Kuki Inpi expressed concern over reports that Kuki residents in Chassad and adjoining areas were being denied access to essential supplies by neighbouring communities, calling it a serious humanitarian issue that requires urgent attention.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the organisation said the Kuki community had exercised restraint despite repeated provocations, but cautioned that restraint should not be interpreted as weakness. It urged authorities to restore normalcy, ensure accountability, and prevent further escalation.
