Chongtham Vikram Singh, a prominent figure in Manipur’s Western music scene and son of celebrated singer Chongtham Kamala, was allegedly attacked after objecting to noise and disturbances outside his residence.

September 7, 2026: Renowned Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, 54, died in Delhi after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of men outside his home in Kilokari village near Ashram, police said on Monday.
Singh had reportedly gone downstairs after objecting to loud shouting and other disturbances allegedly caused by delivery workers and staff of a dhaba operating opposite his residence. Police said he was allegedly attacked during the confrontation and sustained serious injuries.
His son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later died.
A PCR call reporting the assault was received at Sunlight Colony police station on September 7, following which a police team reached the spot. Some suspects, including a minor, have been detained, police said. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the assault and Singh’s subsequent death.

Singh was a prominent figure in Manipur’s Western music scene. He had played guitar with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark. He was the eldest son of celebrated Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala.
The incident triggered concern among members of the Northeast community and civil society groups in Delhi, several of whom gathered outside Sunlight Colony police station demanding the identification and prosecution of those responsible. The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University, condemned the alleged assault and called for a prompt and impartial investigation.
Some members of the community have alleged that Singh may have been targeted because of his Northeastern identity. Police, however, said no racial motive had been established so far and that both the motive and circumstances of the incident remained under investigation.
“Necessary legal action is being taken as per law. Further facts will be established during the investigation,” Delhi Police said.
