CCTV footage and evidence from a rented house in Guduvanchery helped police identify Laskar and his wife as suspects in the gruesome murder.

August 29, 2026: Nearly three weeks after a woman’s dismembered body was discovered inside a suitcase on the Tamil Nadu Express, police have arrested the prime suspect in the gruesome murder, tracing him to Manipur.
Manik Uddin Laskar, 22, was arrested at Kashimpur in Manipur’s Jiribam district by Guduvanchery police. He will be produced before a local magistrate before being brought to Chennai on a transit warrant.
The case came to light on August 5 when passengers travelling in an unreserved coach of Train No. 12621 reported a foul smell after the train reached Agra. Government Railway Police searched a red suitcase and made a grisly discovery — the headless and dismembered body of a woman.

The victim was subsequently identified as Hidayath Nisha, 38, also known as Hayath Nisha, a native of Odisha.
Investigators examining CCTV footage from Chennai Central found images of a man and a woman carrying the suitcase onto the train. Following the trail led police to a rented house on Mosque Street in Guduvanchery.
Police searching the premises recovered additional body parts from a large cooking vessel, strengthening their suspicion that the woman had been killed and dismembered there before her remains were transported by train.
Investigators subsequently identified Laskar and his wife, Bhagmati Majik, as suspects. The couple had allegedly fled after the murder.
With Laskar now in custody, police are continuing their search for Majik.
After completing the legal formalities in Manipur, police are expected to bring Laskar to Tambaram for further interrogation and investigation.
The arrest is expected to help investigators establish the circumstances surrounding Nisha’s murder, the couple’s alleged involvement and the sequence of events leading to the disposal of her remains on the train.
