May 6, 2026: In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across West Bengal’s political landscape, Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal secretary to BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack on Wednesday evening.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police findings, two bike-borne assailants intercepted Rath’s vehicle near the Madhyamgram railway station area around 7:30 pm. The attackers fired multiple rounds at close range, hitting him in the head, chest and abdomen. Critically injured, Rath was rushed to a private hospital in Barasat, where doctors declared him brought dead, confirming multiple gunshot wounds.
Political Reactions Pour In
Condemning the killing, Suvendu Adhikari — widely seen as a frontrunner for the chief minister’s post following the BJP’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections — is expected to address the media and demand a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, sources said.
Senior BJP leaders alleged the हत्या was part of “post-poll revenge violence” by cadres of the All India Trinamool Congress following their electoral defeat. “This is not just an attack on an individual but on democracy itself,” a party spokesperson said, accusing the opposition of failing to accept the people’s mandate.
The Trinamool Congress, however, denied any involvement, calling the आरोप “baseless and politically motivated.” Party leaders suggested the possibility of personal enmity or internal rivalry behind the killing.

Background and Security Concerns
Rath, around 48, had worked closely with Adhikari for over a decade and was considered a trusted confidant. He handled key organisational and campaign responsibilities and was often seen accompanying the BJP leader at major political events.
The incident comes amid reports of sporadic post-poll violence across West Bengal following the recent election results. Clashes have been reported from several districts, including Howrah, North 24 Parganas and Murshidabad, with multiple casualties reported since Monday.
Police Action
Police teams from Barasat and North 24 Parganas district rushed to the spot soon after the incident. Forensic experts are collecting evidence, and CCTV footage from the area is being examined. Officials said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) may be formed to probe the case.
No arrests have been made so far. Investigators are questioning local sources and examining all possible angles, including political rivalry and personal disputes.
Security has been tightened across Madhyamgram to prevent further escalation.
This is a developing story. More details, including the motive behind the attack and identification of the assailants, are awaited.
