Supreme Court criticizes Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda's 'Pak' comment

The Supreme Court took note of a contentious remark made by a Karnataka High Court judge and has requested a report from the state’s Chief Justice.

Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda called Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru ‘Pakistan’

Observing viral videos where Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda refers to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan”, a five-judge Supreme Court bench under Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stressed the importance of upholding judicial decorum.

In a recent court session regarding a landlord-tenant conflict, Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-dominated neighborhood in Bengaluru as “Pakistan” and made a sexist comment about a female lawyer.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices S Khanna, BR Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy, highlighted the importance of setting precise rules for constitutional court judges regarding their comments in court hearings.

Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasizes the need of maintaining judicial decorum

The court emphasized the importance of ensuring that judicial statements are in line with the expected conduct in court, due to the active monitoring and dissemination of courtroom proceedings on social media.

“Attention has been drawn to media reports of the comments made by Justice…of Karnataka High Court during the court proceedings. We request the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after seeking instructions from the Chief Justice of the high court,” Chief Justice Chandrachud stated.

Justice Srishananda’s videos have become popular on social media. In a particular video, the judge is shown remarking to a female lawyer that she seems well-informed about the other party, hinting she could even guess the color of their underwear. In a separate video, the judge referred to a predominantly Muslim area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan”.
