Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike entered its 17th day on Tuesday, with growing concerns over his health. The education reform advocate and climate activist is observing an indefinite fast at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in support of students protesting the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
The protest, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has drawn students, activists, and political leaders from across the country. Protesters are demanding greater accountability for examination irregularities and the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Why Is Sonam Wangchuk on Hunger Strike?
Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest after allegations of a large-scale paper leak in the NEET-UG 2026 examination triggered nationwide outrage. Students claim the leak compromised the fairness of one of India’s biggest entrance exams.
Through his hunger strike, Wangchuk is demanding transparency in the investigation and long-term reforms to restore public trust in the examination system.
Health Concerns Increase
As Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike entered Day 17, doctors monitoring his condition expressed concern over his declining health. According to protest organizers, he has lost around 8.5 kilograms since beginning the fast.
Despite repeated appeals to end the protest, Wangchuk has continued his hunger strike, saying he will not stop until the government takes concrete action on the demands raised by students.
CJP Demands Government Action
The CJP says the protest is about protecting the future of millions of students. The group has demanded:
- Immediate resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

- Strict action against those responsible.
- Stronger safeguards to prevent future paper leaks.
- Reforms to improve transparency in national entrance examinations.

The protest has received support from several opposition leaders and public figures. Many have backed the demand for accountability while urging Wangchuk to end his fast because of his deteriorating health.
The demonstration at Jantar Mantar continues to attract students and civil society groups, making it one of the most prominent protests over the NEET paper leak controversy.
