Ranya Rao, arrested and charged with reportedly smuggling 14.2 kg of gold valued at Rs 12.56 crore, has made shocking allegations in a letter to the Additional Director General of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
In the letter from March 6, she alleged that she was physically attacked, slapped 10-15 times, and hit on her face multiple times for not agreeing to sign the statements they created.
Rao additionally asserted her innocence, stating that she has been wrongfully accused and was struck by officers whom she can identify.
Rao further claimed that she was refused sustenance and faced threats. “In the letter, she stated that one of the officers threatened that if you refuse to sign the documents, we will reveal your father’s name and expose his identity, despite knowing he has no involvement.”
The actress asserted that she had signed 50-60 typed documents and approximately 40 pages of blank sheets as she “faced tremendous pressure, stress, and was physically assaulted; solely by coercion from the DRI officers,” she stated in the letter.

Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of the current Karnataka DGP K Ramachandra Rao.
The letter indicated that she was apprehended straight from the plane and not from the airport terminal, contrary to what the DRI documents suggested.
She further claimed, “They detained me from inside the plane, and during the period from my detention until I was brought to court, I was significantly hit and slapped on my face 10-15 times by the officers, whom I can recognize.”
Asserted that all the documents she signed were done under duress, she contended that the DRI’s account of events did not reflect what truly occurred.
