Indian Captain Shubman Gill continued his excellent batting form in England by scoring his second straight century in as many Tests during the ongoing series against England on Wednesday.

In his first Test series as captain of the Indian team, Gill scored his 16th international century on the opening day to help India get out of a tough situation in second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

In addition to Gill’s century, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 87 contributed to India’s total of 310/5 at the close of play on day one. Overall, Gill struck 12 boundaries. Jaiswal provided India a robust opening with an assertive 87, featuring 13 fours, while Gill exhibited great composure and careful shot choices.

Gill, Jaiswal help India overcome hiccups

Jaiswal provided India with an impressive start with a striking 87, featuring 13 boundaries, while Gill displayed great composure and careful shot selection.

The pair excelled in the morning session until that phase of play right before the Lunch break troubled India once more. In both innings of the Headingley Test, India lost wickets, and this pattern persisted at Edgbaston as well, where Nair was dismissed by a Brydon Carse ball that climbed steeply to catch his edge.

Jaiswal smashed a quickfuire 87

Karun Nair (31) and Rishabh Pant (25) gave away their wickets after promising starts, while Nitish Reddy (1) was utterly baffled when a Chris Woakes nip-backer sharply came back.

India found themselves in a difficult situation at 211/5, but experienced player Ravindra Jadeja demonstrated his worth as a batsman with unbeaten 41 off 67 deliveries. The pair contributed 99 runs to the unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership.

India’s innings began unsteadily after being put to bat on a surface that appeared parched but showed a slight degree of movement initially. KL Rahul struggled through 27 deliveries before chopping on for 2, undone by seam movement from Chris Woakes, who bowled flawlessly in the initial hour.

Gill enters record books

With his second century as captain, Gill entered an elite group—becoming only the fourth Indian to score hundreds in his first two Tests as skipper. He currently stands with Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli.

Gill became the fifth Indian to achieve a Test century at Edgbaston, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Jadeja.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
