November 3, 2026: The promise of a crime-free Bihar under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has come under scrutiny after a serving police officer allegedly entered a woman’s house in Madhubani at night and opened fire on villagers with his service revolver, killing one person and injuring three others.
The shocking incident took place around 1 am on Tuesday in Balirajgarh village under Babubarhi police station limits. The accused Assistant Sub-Inspector, Chandramohan Singh, allegedly fired several rounds after villagers confronted him inside the house.
The firing killed Ashok Yadav, around 50, and left three others injured. They were identified as Phulo Devi, Vijendra Yadav and Dhanik Lal Yadav. The injured were rushed to hospital, where Phulo Devi was reported to be in critical condition.
The incident has triggered outrage in the village, with residents questioning how a police officer entrusted with protecting citizens could allegedly enter a woman’s home under suspicious circumstances and then turn his weapon on those who confronted him.
According to local accounts, the ASI had entered the house with wrongful intentions. A woman allegedly noticed his presence and raised an alarm. Villagers gathered and confronted him. The officer allegedly opened fire while trying to escape.
The Madhubani police have also acknowledged that the officer was allegedly visiting a woman in the village. Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said preliminary findings indicated that villagers had surrounded the ASI and locked him inside a room before he fired several rounds. The allegation of attempted sexual assault, however, remains to be established through investigation.
Woman grabs DM’s collar
https://t.co/NVXXWCV9gx— Somu Anand (@SomuAnand_) November 3, 2026
The killing sparked protests in Madhubani and shock across Bihar, with villagers demanding the immediate arrest of the accused officer and action against those responsible. The anger intensified when District Magistrate Anand Sharma and SP Yogendra Kumar reached the village.
An agitated woman confronted the DM and grabbed his collar as he attempted to speak to residents. Security personnel intervened and escorted the officials away from the crowd.

The confrontation reflected the depth of public anger. Residents were not merely demanding the arrest of one policeman. They were questioning the conduct of the police force and the administration’s ability to protect ordinary people from those wielding state authority.
Villagers blocked the road and demanded justice for Ashok Yadav and the injured. The protest also put the district administration under pressure to explain how the accused officer could allegedly enter a private home, fire his service weapon and then flee.

Accused ASI absconding
The police have suspended Chandramohan Singh and initiated a murder case against him. He fled after the shooting and remained absconding on Tuesday.
The SSP said special teams had been formed to trace him. A reward of Rs 25,000 has also been announced for information leading to his arrest. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area.
The Bihar police have promised strict action and a speedy trial. But the immediate challenge is to arrest the accused and establish the sequence of events through eyewitness accounts, statements of the injured and forensic evidence.
Investigators will have to determine why the ASI entered the house, what happened before the confrontation, how many rounds he fired and whether the shooting was an attempt to escape or a deliberate attack on the villagers.
Crime-free Bihar claim faces questions
The incident has raised uncomfortable questions for the Samrat Choudhary government, which has made law and order a central promise. The alleged involvement of a serving police officer makes the case particularly serious.
A police officer is expected to enforce the law, not become the subject of allegations of criminal conduct. If the allegations are established, the incident would represent a grave abuse of official authority and the weapon entrusted to him by the state.
The government cannot restore public confidence through a suspension order and an announcement of a reward alone. It must ensure an impartial investigation, arrest the accused and make the findings public. Any attempt to shield the officer or dilute the case would deepen public distrust.
For the family of Ashok Yadav, the immediate demand is justice. For the residents of Balirajgarh, the larger question is whether they can trust the police to protect them.
The incident has placed the government’s crime-free Bihar claim under a harsh spotlight. A state cannot claim to be free of crime if those entrusted with enforcing the law are themselves accused of committing serious offences.
