A Kolkata court today sentenced Sanjay Roy, the perpetrator in the rape-murder case of a 34-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, to life imprisonment and observed that the case did not qualify as being in the ‘rarest of the rare’ category for capital punishment.
Justice Anirban Das additionally instructed the West Bengal government to compensate the victim’s parents with Rs 17 lakh. The parents of the victim, present in the courtroom, clasped their hands and expressed that they seek justice instead of compensation.
The judge stated that he has mandated the compensation according to the law and they are at liberty to utilize the funds as they wish. The judge explained that the family should not regard this sum as restitution for their daughter’s rape and murder.
Roy has been found guilty under parts of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning rape and murder.
Earlier today, the court listened to Roy and the closing arguments regarding the sentence. Speaking to the court, Roy remarked, “I did not do this. I have been set up. Many things were ruined, but if I had caused it, my rudraksha mala would have shattered. You determine if I have been set up or not.”
