Even as Chief Minister Hemant Soren has offered talks, student leaders say no official communication on the meeting has been received. Protesters have formed an 11-member delegation but insist they will continue their agitation until concrete action is taken.

Ranchi, August 7, 2026: Student organisations spearheading the agitation against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) will march towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Friday, escalating their protest even as the state government has expressed willingness to hold talks.
The Assembly march, announced by the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch, comes on the 14th day of the indefinite agitation being held at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi. Protest leaders have appealed to government job aspirants from every district of Jharkhand to join the march in large numbers, describing it as a decisive step in their campaign for a fair and transparent recruitment system.
The protest, which began in the last week of July over alleged irregularities in the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination, has since evolved into one of Jharkhand’s largest youth-led movements. Hundreds of aspirants have been participating in the sit-in, demanding accountability, transparency and structural reforms in the state’s recruitment process.
Even as preparations for the Assembly march gathered pace, uncertainty continued over the proposed dialogue with the state government.
Following Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s statement that the government’s doors remained open for discussions, the protesters constituted an 11-member delegation comprising eight student representatives, two journalists as advisers and one advocate. According to the Reforms Manch, only the student representatives will directly negotiate with the government, while the journalists and legal expert will provide guidance to ensure an orderly and constructive dialogue.
However, student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has also been on an indefinite hunger strike, said no formal communication had yet been received from the government.
“Neither a time nor a date nor confirmation has been received yet. We are only receiving assurances of talks, as we are getting information from the team. No government official has approached me yet. As far as we feel, if an investigation happens, then many big faces around those people—their faces will also be exposed and tarnished,” Mahto said.
The protesters have maintained that they are open to dialogue but insist that any discussions must lead to concrete action on their principal demands rather than mere assurances.
Foremost among those demands is the cancellation of the disputed 14th JPSC Preliminary Examination, conducted in April, whose results were declared in early July. They are also demanding an independent investigation—either by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or by a panel of retired High Court judges from outside Jharkhand—into alleged irregularities involving multiple JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations over the past several years.
The students have rejected the ongoing CID probe, arguing that previous investigations into paper leaks and recruitment controversies failed to ensure accountability or restore public confidence.
The controversy intensified after the declaration of the preliminary examination results, which shortlisted more than 2,200 candidates for the next stage of recruitment. Allegations subsequently surfaced regarding possible manipulation of OMR answer sheets, the involvement of a private agency that had previously been blacklisted, and recurring issues such as paper leaks, delayed recruitment cycles and lack of transparency in evaluation and result preparation.

The CID has arrested several individuals, including officials and personnel associated with private agencies linked to the examination process, while the former JPSC chairman has also been questioned. Amid the growing unrest, the Commission postponed the Mains examination.

The protest site has remained active despite rain and difficult conditions. Students have organised torchlight processions, raised slogans demanding a CBI probe, and continued round-the-clock demonstrations. The indefinite hunger strike by Mahto and other protesters has added urgency to the movement, which has also drawn support from opposition leaders who have visited the protest venue and raised the issue during the ongoing monsoon session of the Jharkhand Assembly.
For thousands of aspirants, the movement represents years of accumulated frustration over delayed recruitments, cancelled examinations, repeated paper leak allegations and what they describe as an opaque and unreliable selection process.

Friday’s proposed march to the Assembly is expected to be the biggest mobilisation since the agitation began. While the formation of the negotiation committee has opened the possibility of dialogue, the protesters insist that they will continue their agitation until the government announces concrete measures to restore credibility to Jharkhand’s public recruitment system.
