A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking immediate medical intervention for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi since June 28.
The petition requests the court to direct the Central and Delhi governments to shift Wangchuk to a government hospital and provide him with medical treatment, including force-feeding if necessary, to prevent further deterioration of his health.
Hunger Strike Linked to Education System Protests
Sonam Wangchuk joined protests demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged question paper leaks and irregularities in India’s education system. The demonstrations are being organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical political collective that has been protesting since June 20.
According to the petition, Wangchuk’s health condition has worsened significantly during the hunger strike.
PIL Claims Wangchuk Has Lost 8.5 Kg
The PIL, filed by activist lawyer Rakesh Kumar Saini, states that Sonam Wangchuk has lost approximately 8.5 kilograms since beginning his fast. The petitioner has argued that if the hunger strike continues, Wangchuk’s life could be at serious risk.
The plea further claims that if any harm comes to Wangchuk, it would bring “great shame for the country and the world.”
Petition Calls for Force-Feeding to Save His Life
The petitioner has urged the Delhi High Court to direct authorities to provide medical assistance even without Wangchuk’s consent if required to preserve his life.
According to the plea:
“The simple thing to be done is to take him to a government hospital and force-feed him the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals by way of a liquid diet which are necessary for the human body to survive.”
The petition argues that providing medical attention is the minimum responsibility of the government in such circumstances.
Allegations Against Government’s Handling of the Situation
The PIL has criticised the government’s alleged inaction, claiming that Wangchuk is being treated “like a hardcore criminal, terrorist or traitor to the nation.” It further contends that authorities have failed to demonstrate adequate concern for his health and well-being.
The petitioner has expressed confidence that the judiciary will intervene to protect Wangchuk’s right to life and provide appropriate relief.

What Is the Cockroach Janta Party?
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is an online satirical movement that has gained popularity across social media platforms, particularly among younger audiences. Founded by Dipke, a resident of Boston, United States, the collective uses political satire to address issues such as unemployment, institutional accountability, media freedom, and public policy concerns.
The organisation has been leading protests at Jantar Mantar since June 20, calling for accountability in the education sector and demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
