Officials reported that one individual was killed and multiple others sustained injuries when 11 coaches of the Kamakhya Express came off the tracks near Nergundi Station in the Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section of the Khurda Road Division of East Coast Railway in Odisha on Sunday.
According to sources speaking to CNN-News18, the individual who died in the incident has been identified as Suvankar Roy, age 23. He originates from the Alipur region of West Bengal, they noted.
“We have received one deceased individual along with several injured passengers. Three groups of physicians are involved in treating the wounded passengers,” said Subash Chandra Ray, the Administrative officer of SCB Medical College and Hospital.
The SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC SF Express (12551) was en route from Bengaluru to Guwahati when the event occurred at 11:54 am, according to officials.
A team of railway workers hurried to the location to evaluate the circumstances and implement required measures. An Accident Relief Train and a Medical Relief Train have also been sent to the location.
The authorities have not yet determined the reason for the derailment.
The Railways provided helpline numbers regarding the incident — 8991124238 (Cuttack) and 8455885999 (Bhubaneswar).

Certain trains were also redirected from their original path because of derailment.
12822 Dhauli Express, 12875 Neelachal Express, and 22606 Purulia SF Express have been rerouted with immediate effect.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi voiced worries about the derailment and stated that officials are striving to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
“Deeply concerned about the derailment of Kamakhya Express near Nergundi station in #Cuttack. Grateful that all passengers are safe. Authorities are on-site, ensuring assistance and restoring normalcy at the earliest. Helplines activated for support,” he posted on X.
