October 12: Anger over the alleged killing and beheading of a 52-year-old man in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district has escalated into a direct ultimatum to armed groups: return his severed head within 48 hours or face “the most stringent measures”.
The Joint Tribes Council Manipur issued the warning after the headless body of Ajinbou R was brought to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal for post-mortem on Sunday night. His head remains missing, with a video purportedly showing it in the possession of armed men in camouflage circulating widely on social media.

n Sunday, the Joint Tribes Council Manipur said, “The head of Ajinbou R remains missing. Post-mortem will not be conducted till his head is returned to his family members for a dignified burial. We will not allow state machinery to mutilate the remains further while his head is treated as a trophy by militants.”
Blaming both state and Central governments the renewed violence, it said, “This heinous crime is an affront to humanity.” The council issued a “non-negotiable 48-hour ultimatum” to locate and return the severed head, failing which it warned of taking the “most stringent measures” to secure justice.
Ajinbou was allegedly killed in Makui Ashang village on Saturday in what is suspected to have been a militant attack carried out allegedy by Kuki militants.. The Naga civil society group has demanded that his head be returned to his family before any post-mortem is conducted, saying he must be given a dignified burial.
The demand comes as a fresh wave of Kuki-Naga violence has left at least nine people dead across Manipur’s Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts over Friday and Saturday.
The violence has been reported across Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi, raising fears that the fragile calm in the hills is once again giving way to a cycle of revenge attacks.
The immediate trigger was the killing of a 22-year-old mother of five in Chassad village of Kamjong district on Friday night. The shooting was followed by armed clashes between Kuki and Naga groups, with further casualties reported on Saturday. The incidents have added to a growing list of killings since February, with more than 50 people reportedly killed and dozens of houses destroyed in violence involving the two communities.
