This year, Mahindra will debut the eagerly anticipated Thar 5-door during its yearly Independence Day celebration. This will be Mahindra’s fourth August 15 product announcement; the company first unveiled the new Thar globally in 2020, then the XUV700 in 2021, and last year its born-electric prototypes in the UK. The event this year will be held in South Africa.
Given that South Africa is anticipated to be one of Thar’s international markets, the debut there is especially noteworthy. Mahindra has been present there since 1996, and company has recently increased. As a result, the company plans to add the Thar to its lineup of SUVs in South Africa, where it presently offers the XUV300, XUV700, and Scorpio N.
The 5-door version makes sense as an addition to the Thar lineup and will enable the Mahindra off-roader to appeal to a wider range of buyers who are looking for a reliable, all-weather SUV that also offers more comfort and utility for the whole family. Something the freshly released Maruti Suzuki Jimny is able to provide.
However, the Thar will be positioned above. Larger engines, including the same 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel as the 3-door Thar, will be available. In addition to being substantially longer—3,985 mm—the 5-door Thar will also be wider and taller—1,820 mm and 1,850 mm, respectively—than the 5-door Jimny, which measures 1,645 mm and 1,720 mm, respectively.
The 5-door Thar will most likely seat five people, unlike the Jimny’s and the 3-door Thar’s four-passenger configuration. Given its extra length, a third row may possibly be possible, as seen in the spy photos.
Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., recently indicated that the 5-door Thar will make its market debut in India sometime in 2024.
It is anticipated that the inside of the next-generation Mahindra Thar 5-door will resemble that of the current model. Along with air conditioning, power windows, ABS, EBD, numerous airbags, and smartphone connectivity, it will also have a touchscreen infotainment system.
The additional room, which the 5-door model can fit five people in, will be one of the largest interior modifications.
