Justice Sanjiv Khanna appointed as 51st Chief Justice of India; to take oath on November 11
Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed to serve as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice Khanna is expected to be sworn in on November 11, replacing CJI D Y Chandrachud who is set to retire on November 10.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made the announcement on X on the evening of October 24.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” his post read.

Who is Justice Khanna
Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 from the Delhi High Court. He is due to retire on May 13, 2025.
He was part of the Constitution Bench that upheld the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution of India last year.
Justice Khanna, as a member of the Supreme Court, has issued numerous important rulings. He was a member of the Constitution Bench that invalidated the Electoral Bonds scheme that allowed undisclosed donations to political parties.
In July, a bench led by him had granted temporary bail to Arvind Kejriwal, who was the Chief Minister of Delhi, in the money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy.
