Nidhi Tewari, a young IFS officer, has been designated as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is an officer of the Indian Foreign Services from the 2014 batch.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned her appointment to take effect immediately, as stated in the memorandum released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on March 29.
Tewari attained the 96th position in the Civil Services Examination of 2013. She originates from Mehmurganj in Varanasi – which has been the Prime Minister’s Lok Sabha constituency since 2014.

Tewari has held the position of Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office since January 6, 2023. In 2022, she became an Under Secretary in the PMO.
During her time at the Ministry of External Affairs previously, Tewari worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division.
Tewari has thus worked for more than three years at the PMO. Prior to passing the Civil Services Examination in 2013, she served as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while studying for the exam alongside her employment.
The Prime Minister has had two Private Secretaries so far – Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah.
