May 11, 2026: Amid a massive show of political strength and celebration by BJP supporters, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, cementing his position as the most dominant political figure in the state’s contemporary politics.
The grand swearing-in ceremony was held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati in the presence of top national leaders of the NDA, senior BJP functionaries, and thousands of party workers and supporters from across Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP national president J. P. Nadda attended the event along with several NDA chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, Union ministers, and senior party leaders from across the country.
The venue witnessed elaborate security arrangements, with multi-layered security deployment, barricading, traffic diversions, drone surveillance, and heavy police presence across Guwahati to ensure smooth conduct of the ceremony.

Historic Political Achievement
Sarma’s return to power marks a historic milestone in Assam politics. He has become the first non-Congress chief minister in the state’s history to complete a full five-year term and return to office with another decisive electoral mandate.
The swearing-in also marks the formation of the third consecutive NDA government in Assam, underlining the BJP-led alliance’s continuing political dominance in the northeastern state.
Along with Sarma, four ministers were sworn into the new cabinet:
- Rameswar Teli (BJP)
- Atul Bora (AGP)
- Charan Boro (BPF)
- Ajanta Neog (BJP)
Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has meanwhile been nominated as the NDA candidate for Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Officials said the first cabinet meeting of the new government is expected shortly after the oath-taking ceremony. Sarma has already indicated that the new administration will focus on rapid implementation of the BJP’s election promises, infrastructure expansion, welfare delivery, employment generation, and investment-led development.
Massive Electoral Mandate
The NDA secured an emphatic victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
The BJP alone won 82 seats, crossing the majority mark on its own for the first time in Assam’s political history. Its alliance partners — the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front — won 10 seats each.
The landslide victory is widely being seen as a strong endorsement of Sarma’s leadership style, welfare-oriented governance, and the BJP’s organisational strength in the Northeast.
Family Presence and Emotional Moments
The ceremony also carried emotional significance for Sarma’s family. His wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma and daughter Sukanya Sarma were present during the oath-taking ceremony and were seen interacting with supporters and dignitaries.
Riniki described the occasion as “a very happy moment” for the family, while Sukanya expressed pride and happiness over her father’s political achievement.

From Congress Strategist to BJP Strongman
Sarma’s political journey has been one of the most dramatic transformations in contemporary Indian politics. Once considered a powerful strategist and senior leader within the Congress, he handled several important portfolios in earlier Assam governments before parting ways with the party nearly a decade ago and joining the BJP.
Since then, he has emerged as the principal architect of the BJP’s rapid rise across the Northeast, playing a crucial role not only in Assam but also in coalition-building and political expansion in neighbouring states.
After the election results, Sarma remarked that the BJP in Assam had moved “from expansion mode to execution mode,” signalling that his second term would focus less on political consolidation and more on governance, implementation, and delivery of promises made during his first tenure from 2021 to 2026.
Tuesday’s ceremony is being viewed as a major political moment for the NDA in the Northeast, reinforcing Assam’s position as the BJP’s strongest bastion in the region and underscoring Sarma’s growing stature within national politics.
