The Government of India has handed over the NEET-UG 2026 controversy to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a comprehensive probe into alleged irregularities and suspected malpractice.

May 12, 2026: In a move that has sent shockwaves across India’s education sector, the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3, citing serious irregularities and concerns over the integrity of the country’s largest medical entrance test.
The examination, taken by more than 20 lakh aspirants nationwide, will now be conducted afresh on new dates to be announced separately by the agency in the coming days.
The decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India after what officials described as a detailed review of intelligence inputs, investigative findings, and reports shared by central law enforcement agencies. The development marks one of the gravest crises in the history of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the single gateway for admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other undergraduate medical programmes across the country.
In an official statement issued late Tuesday evening, the NTA said it had already referred the matter to central agencies on May 8 for independent verification and necessary action to ensure “the fair, secure, and credible conduct of national examinations.”
The statement, issued as a continuation of the agency’s earlier communication dated May 10, said the evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation had raised serious concerns about the sanctity of the examination process.
“On the basis of the inputs subsequently examined by NTA in coordination with the central agencies, and the investigative findings shared by the law enforcement agencies, the National Testing Agency, with the approval of the Government of India, has decided to cancel the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on 3 May 2026,” the statement read.

The agency further said that the material and evidence collected during the investigation established beyond doubt that “the examination process could not be allowed to stand.”
Fresh examination dates, revised schedules, and details regarding issuance of new admit cards are expected to be announced shortly through the NTA’s official platforms.
CBI Takes Over Investigation
In a parallel development, the Government of India has transferred the entire matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive criminal investigation into the alleged irregularities, suspected paper leaks, and possible organised malpractice linked to the examination.
Officials indicated that the probe will examine the role of coaching networks, intermediaries, digital leaks, impersonation rackets, and any possible institutional lapses that may have compromised the examination.
The NTA said it would extend full cooperation to the CBI and provide all documents, digital records, examination data, surveillance material, and logistical details required during the investigation.
Massive Anxiety Among Students
The cancellation has triggered widespread distress among students and parents across the country. For lakhs of aspirants, NEET represents years of preparation, enormous financial investment, and intense academic pressure.
Many candidates had already begun planning for counselling, admissions, relocation, and accommodation based on the assumption that results would be declared according to schedule.
Students and parents took to social media soon after the announcement, expressing frustration, anger, and exhaustion over yet another controversy involving a national-level examination.
Education experts warned that the cancellation could significantly delay the academic calendar for medical colleges across India, potentially affecting admissions, counselling rounds, and the commencement of the new academic session.
Shadow of Previous Controversies
This is not the first time NEET has come under scrutiny. The 2024 edition of the examination had also sparked massive controversy amid allegations of paper leaks, grace marks irregularities, inflated scores, and examination malpractice. That controversy led to nationwide protests, multiple court petitions, and intervention by the Supreme Court.
However, the 2026 episode appears far more severe, as authorities have chosen to cancel the entire examination rather than proceed with the declaration of results under disputed circumstances.
Observers say the move reflects growing pressure on examination authorities to restore public trust in India’s competitive examination system, which has repeatedly faced allegations of leaks, corruption, and procedural lapses in recent years.
Questions Over Examination Reforms
The latest scandal is also expected to reignite debate over the functioning of the NTA, which conducts several high-stakes national entrance examinations including NEET, JEE, CUET, and UGC-NET.
Opposition parties and education activists have already begun demanding stronger accountability mechanisms, enhanced cybersecurity safeguards, tighter monitoring systems, and structural reforms in the conduct of national-level examinations.
As the CBI begins its investigation and students brace for another round of preparation, the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 has once again exposed the enormous stakes — and vulnerabilities — surrounding India’s fiercely competitive entrance examination ecosystem.
