India is set to usher in a fresh era in Test cricket as Shubman Gill has been named the captain for the upcoming five-match series against England, beginning June 20, 2025. The 25-year-old opener takes over the reins from Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, returning to full fitness and form, has been appointed as vice-captain.

A Bold New Chapter

After the retirement of India’s Test revolutionizer Virat Kohli and former captain Rohit Sharma, Gill’s  appointment symbolizes a significant transition in Indian cricket leadership. Already seen as the torchbearer of the next generation, the Punjab-born right-hander has impressed with his composure, technical brilliance, and maturity beyond his years. Having previously captained India in T20Is and led Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Gill now shoulders the responsibility of leading India in the format that many still regard as the ultimate test of skill and temperament.

Pant’s return as vice-captain is equally symbolic. The 27-year-old has evolved into one of India’s most dependable match-winners, particularly in overseas conditions. His aggressive approach, combined with increasing tactical awareness, makes him an ideal deputy to Gill as India navigates a challenging tour.

Squad Highlights

The Indian selectors have unveiled a balanced squad of 18 players that blends youth and experience, with several new faces receiving a nod for their domestic performances:

  1. Shubman Gill (Captain)
  2. Rishabh Pant (Vice-Captain) (WK)
  3. Yashasvi Jaiswal
  4. KL Rahul
  5. B Sai Sudharsan
  6. Abhimanyu Easwaran
  7. Karun Nair
  8. Nitish Reddy
  9. Ravindra Jadeja
  10. Dhruv Jurel (WK)
  11. Washington Sundar
  12. Shardul Thakur
  13. Jasprit Bumrah
  14. Mohammed Siraj
  15.  Prasidh Krishna

  16. Akash Deep
  17.  Arshdeep Singh
  18.  Kuldeep Yadav

Among the newcomers, B Sai Sudharsan’s inclusion marks his elevation into the Test fold after consistent white-ball and first-class performances. Karun Nair makes a return, offering much-needed experience in the middle order. The bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, is a potent mix of pace and swing, with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja handling spin duties.

Strategic Shifts and Expectations

With the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle kicking off, this series assumes added importance for the Indian side. The absence of senior figures like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma means that this team will need to craft a new identity quickly. The selection of dynamic, versatile cricketers suggests a more aggressive and flexible approach — one that could suit Gill and Pant’s natural styles of play.

India’s tour of England has historically been a stern test, often separating the best from the rest. For Shubman Gill, this will not just be about leading on the scoreboard, but leading by example in foreign conditions where batting is always a premium.

Looking Ahead

All eyes will be on the young captain-vice-captain duo as they prepare to take on England on their home turf. Their ability to gel as leaders and inspire a transitioning squad could define India’s Test trajectory over the next few years.

The first Test begins at Lord’s on June 20. For Indian fans, it promises to be the beginning of an exciting new era one led by the calm head of Gill and the fire of Pant.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
