Ladakh is set to get 30 smart bus shelters, with 15 each in Leh and Kargil, designed to protect commuters from the region’s freezing winters, snow and strong winds.

AUGUST 31: Ladakh is set to get 30 solar-powered smart bus shelters equipped with real-time bus tracking, emergency facilities and passenger information systems, in a push to make public transport safer and more resilient to the Union Territory’s extreme weather.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stone for the project on Monday, with 15 shelters each planned for Leh and Kargil.

The shelters are aimed at commuters who currently wait for buses in the open, often amid freezing temperatures, strong winds and snowfall. Students, women, senior citizens, workers and daily commuters are expected to benefit from the weather-protected facilities.

According to the Ladakh Administration, each shelter will have GPS-enabled passenger information displays, LED screens, bus tracking and real-time estimated arrival information.

Safety and accessibility features will include CCTV cameras, SOS and emergency buttons, first-aid kits, oxygen cylinders and fire extinguishers. Tactile tiles and accessible pathways are also planned to make the shelters easier to use for visually impaired and other passengers.

The shelters will rely largely on solar power. Each facility will have a 2-kW solar photovoltaic system, battery storage and a hybrid inverter. The solar systems will power Wi-Fi, passenger information displays and other essential equipment, reducing dependence on the electricity grid.

The project is also being positioned as part of Ladakh’s broader push towards sustainable and climate-conscious infrastructure.

The Administration said the shelters would combine modern technology with elements of traditional Ladakhi architecture, giving the facilities a local identity while providing protection from the region’s harsh climate.

Saxena said the project was about more than constructing bus stops, describing the shelters as essential public infrastructure designed around the everyday needs of residents.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support for infrastructure development in Ladakh and urged residents to help maintain the shelters and keep them clean and functional.

The Administration said the project would improve mobility while strengthening safety, accessibility and passenger convenience.

The initiative comes as Ladakh seeks to build infrastructure suited to its fragile high-altitude environment and advance its goal of reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

With solar power, digital passenger information and emergency facilities built into their design, the 30 shelters are intended to bring public transport infrastructure in Leh and Kargil in line with the region’s growing emphasis on sustainability and climate resilience.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
