The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued fresh summons to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Lok Sabha MP, Mahua Moitra, in connection with a case related to the contravention of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). News agency PTI has confirmed that Mahua Moitra has been called up on Thursday, 28th March, for interrogation.
This development comes amidst a series of legal battles surrounding Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha last year for “unethical conduct.” Despite this setback, Moitra has been renominated by the TMC to contest from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal.

Third ED Summon for Mahua Moitra
This is the third summon from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra concerning irregularities in a foreign exchange contravention case. ED has asked her to join the probe on March 28 in Delhi. In addition to the ED summons, Moitra is also facing scrutiny from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI is conducting a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Moitra, which were raised following a reference from the Lokpal. These allegations, brought forward by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, accuse Moitra of leveraging her position in the Lok Sabha to target the Adani group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for gifts. Moreover, Dubey alleged that Moitra’s actions compromised national security for monetary gains, leading to her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December.

Mahua Moirta Denies Wrongdoing in FEMA Case
Despite these severe accusations, Moitra vehemently denies any wrongdoing. She has consistently maintained that she is being targeted unjustly due to her vocal criticism of the Adani group’s deals. In a statement made in November, Moitra criticized the media circus surrounding the allegations, highlighting the absence of any official communication from the Lokpal or the CBI regarding the investigation. She underscored the importance of addressing significant issues, such as the alleged Adani coal scam, which she believes warrants greater attention from investigative agencies.
Moitra’s legal battles extend beyond the ED and CBI investigations. She has also approached the Supreme Court to challenge her expulsion from the Lok Sabha concerning the ‘cash-for-query’ allegations. Despite facing significant legal challenges and mounting pressure, Moitra remains steadfast in her defense, asserting her innocence and challenging the validity of the accusations against her.
In summary, Mahua Moitra’s involvement in legal proceedings related to FEMA violations, coupled with allegations of impropriety during her tenure in the Lok Sabha, underscores the complexities of India’s political landscape. As these investigations unfold, the outcome will impact Moitra’s political career and have broader implications for the TMC and the larger political sphere in West Bengal.
