NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have decided not to pursue criminal proceedings against a 15-year-old girl whose video containing abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral during a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, after she issued a public apology expressing remorse, sources said.

The decision comes after the teenager said she had been “influenced” into repeating the remarks and called the incident her “first and last mistake.”

A Zero FIR was initially registered at Noida’s Expressway police station before being transferred to Delhi, where the alleged incident took place.

In a video apology shared on social media on Friday, the girl, who identified herself as 15 years old, said she had not uploaded the viral clip herself and was deeply remorseful.

“I went to Connaught Place with my friends in July. We came across a group of people who were using abusive and objectionable language against the prime minister. They influenced me and encouraged me to repeat those words, and I did,” she said.

Expressing regret, she added: “I am not able to look anyone in the eye. I appeal to the entire country to please forgive me. I am only 15 years old. This is my first and last mistake, and I will never repeat such an act again.”

The apology followed a complaint that led to the registration of a Zero FIR in Noida. Expressway police station SHO Amit Khatri had said the teenager currently lives with her family in Faridabad.

“The case was registered as a Zero FIR at the Expressway police station and has been transferred to Parliament Street police station in New Delhi. Further action will be taken by the Delhi Police,” Khatri told PTI at the time.

The FIR was transferred after police established that the alleged offence occurred in the national capital. It was registered on the complaint of a Ghaziabad resident under Sections 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(1) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

However, following the girl’s apology and considering her age, Delhi Police have now decided not to register a formal case against her, according to sources.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
