August 2: A peace march demanding an end to violence in Pakistan’s troubled Swat Valley descended into chaos on Sunday when a suspected suicide bomber struck outside a police station, killing at least seven people—including police personnel—and injuring 18 others in one of the deadliest attacks in the region this year.
The explosion occurred near Kabal Police Station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat district, where members of the Swat Aman Jirga, a local tribal peace council, had gathered for a rally calling for improved security. Participants were carrying placards and chanting slogans in support of peace when the blast ripped through the area, sending people fleeing in panic.
Police officials believe the attacker was attempting to storm the police station before being intercepted by security personnel at the entrance. According to investigators, the suspect detonated the explosives after being stopped outside the gate, preventing what could have been an even deadlier assault. Authorities said a severed head recovered from the scene is believed to belong to the bomber.
The attack took place near Kabal Chowk, where a separate demonstration by local youths was also under way. Videos purportedly capturing the moment of the explosion quickly spread across social media.
Swat District Police Officer Mohammad Umar confirmed the casualties, saying the blast occurred near the main entrance of the police station. Senior police officials, including Malakand Deputy Inspector General Syed Fida Hussain, said preliminary investigations indicate that alert officers prevented the attacker from entering the heavily guarded compound.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene within minutes, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals as police and other security agencies sealed off the area and launched a forensic investigation.
While early reports carried varying casualty figures, officials later confirmed that seven people were killed and 18 others injured, with several of the wounded reported to be in critical condition. The dead include members of the police force who were deployed to secure the rally.

No militant group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.
The bombing comes amid renewed concerns over deteriorating security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence has surged over the past two years. Once regarded as one of Pakistan’s premier tourist destinations, the picturesque Swat Valley was a stronghold of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during the insurgency of 2007–09 before a major military offensive drove militants out of the region.
Although relative calm returned for several years, Swat has witnessed a resurgence of militant activity in recent times. Security personnel, tribal elders, peace committee members and civilians have increasingly come under attack, reviving fears that extremist groups are attempting to re-establish their presence in the valley.
The Swat Aman Jirga, which organised Sunday’s peace rally, has been at the forefront of community efforts to resist militancy and demand stronger action from the government. Similar jirgas and local peace committees across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have frequently found themselves in the crosshairs of militant organisations because of their cooperation with state authorities.
Following the blast, security was tightened across the district, with additional police and paramilitary forces deployed at sensitive locations. Investigators are examining the identity of the attacker, possible accomplices and whether the police station or the peace rally was the primary target.
The bombing serves as another reminder of the fragile security situation in northwestern Pakistan, where repeated counterterrorism operations have failed to completely eliminate the threat posed by militant networks. For Swat’s residents, who had gathered to demand lasting peace and a return to normalcy, Sunday’s attack underscored how elusive that goal remains.
