As the 2026 Kanwar Yatra enters its final phase, viral videos of dancing, alleged drinking and earlier incidents of vandalism and clashes involving some Kanwariyas have fuelled questions over the changing character of one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages.

New Delhi. August 5, 2026: The annual Kanwar Yatra, one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages and traditionally associated with penance, self-restraint and devotion to Lord Shiva, is once again at the centre of controversy after a series of viral social media videos appeared to show some participants dancing on public roads and, in another instance, allegedly consuming alcohol during the pilgrimage.
The clips, widely circulated on X and other platforms, have reignited an old but increasingly intense debate: Is the Kanwar Yatra gradually transforming from a sacred act of devotion into a carnival of entertainment for a section of participants?
The latest controversy comes against the backdrop of numerous other viral videos that have surfaced during this year’s Kanwar Yatra, purportedly showing some Kanwariyas vandalising vehicles, assaulting motorists, clashing with police personnel and allegedly attacking members of the public during disputes along the pilgrimage routes.
Several such incidents have intensified concerns over law and order and fuelled criticism that a small but disruptive section of participants is overshadowing the devotion of millions of peaceful pilgrims. The repeated circulation of such videos has prompted fresh questions about whether the spirit of discipline and self-restraint traditionally associated with the yatra is being eroded by growing displays of aggression, entitlement and performative behaviour.

One of the most widely shared videos, posted on August 4, shows a group of young women dressed in saffron, red and orange—the colours traditionally associated with Kanwariyas—dancing enthusiastically on a rain-soaked roadside as fellow pilgrims and passing vehicles look on. The video’s caption sarcastically referred to the growing trend of “mujra-style” reels by Kanwariyas and mocked the state government’s ceremonial welcome of pilgrims.

Another viral clip, shared the same day, purportedly shows a group of young men seated under a temporary shelter pouring a yellowish liquid from plastic bottles into disposable cups while eating roasted chickpeas and cucumber slices. Although the contents of the bottles cannot be independently verified from the video, the user who posted the clip alleged that the men were consuming alcohol during the pilgrimage.
The group can be seen hurriedly discarding the liquid-filled cups and bottles after appearing to notice that they were being filmed or confronted by people nearby. The video has fuelled widespread criticism online because Kanwar Yatra traditions explicitly prohibit intoxicants.
Neither of the videos has been independently verified, and it remains unclear when and where they were recorded. Nevertheless, they have struck a nerve because they appear to challenge the very principles that have historically defined the pilgrimage.
The Kanwar Yatra, held during the holy month of Sawan, requires devotees—known as Kanwariyas—to collect sacred Ganga water from places such as Haridwar, Gaumukh and Sultanganj and carry it, often barefoot over hundreds of kilometres, to offer at Shiva temples. The pilgrimage has traditionally emphasised discipline, celibacy, vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, and a life of simplicity during the journey.
For countless devotees, these practices remain non-negotiable expressions of faith.
Yet the character of the yatra has undergone a visible transformation over the past decade. Massive DJ systems, high-decibel music, decorated trucks, choreographed dance performances and social media content creation have increasingly become part of the spectacle. Many participants document their journeys through Instagram reels and short videos, while some camps compete to organise louder music and more elaborate processions.
Critics argue that this growing culture of performance risks overshadowing the pilgrimage’s spiritual purpose.
Religious scholars and devotees have repeatedly expressed concern that the yatra is increasingly becoming a platform for viral fame rather than introspection and devotion. Videos of dancing, reckless driving, dangerous stunts, traffic violations and alleged misconduct have surfaced almost every year, prompting questions about whether discipline is giving way to spectacle.
The latest clips have added another layer to that debate.
If the allegations of alcohol consumption are true, critics argue, they represent a direct violation of the vows traditionally observed by Kanwariyas. Many state governments impose restrictions on liquor sales along pilgrimage routes during the yatra precisely because intoxicants are considered incompatible with the religious observance.
The controversy has also exposed what many social media users describe as a double standard. Several posts questioned how strict public campaigns against meat consumption during Sawan coexist with videos allegedly showing pilgrims drinking alcohol without attracting comparable outrage. Others argued that had similar dance performances taken place in a different context, they would likely have provoked far harsher criticism.
Supporters of the pilgrimage, however, caution against judging millions of devotees through a handful of viral clips. They argue that the overwhelming majority of Kanwariyas continue to undertake arduous journeys with sincerity and devotion, and that isolated incidents—particularly unverified videos circulating on social media—should not define an entire religious tradition.
That distinction is important.
Every year, millions of pilgrims participate peacefully in the Kanwar Yatra, enduring long walks through rain and intense heat in fulfilment of religious vows. Authorities across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Haryana and neighbouring states deploy thousands of police personnel, establish medical camps, regulate traffic and create temporary infrastructure to manage one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
Yet the recurring appearance of videos showing dancing, DJ parties, alleged drinking and other behaviour viewed as inconsistent with the pilgrimage’s spiritual ideals suggests that authorities and religious organisations may face an increasingly difficult challenge: preserving the sanctity of an ancient tradition in an era dominated by social media, instant celebrity and performative participation.
Whether these viral clips represent isolated excesses or symptoms of a broader cultural shift remains open to debate. What is beyond dispute is that they have revived uncomfortable questions about the direction in which the Kanwar Yatra is evolving—and whether devotion is slowly being eclipsed by spectacle.
