Paris, France – Chess will once again take center stage at the Esports World Cup, with organizers confirming that the game will return in 2026 with a prize pool of $1.5 million and a new venue in.
The tournament, scheduled for August 11-15, marks the second consecutive appearance of chess at the global esports festival after its successful debut in 2025. Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, who captured the inaugural title last year, is expected to defend his crown as elite players from around the world compete for one of the biggest purses in competitive chess.
The event represents another major step in the growing relationship between traditional chess and modern esports. Chess was added to the Esports World Cup through a multi-year partnership between Chess.com and the Esports World Cup Foundation, helping bring the centuries-old game to a broader digital audience.
Paris Becomes New Home for Chess Finals
Unlike the inaugural edition held in Riyadh, the 2026 Chess Finals will be staged in Paris, adding one of Europe’s most iconic cities to the championship’s history. Organizers believe the move will strengthen the event’s international appeal and attract a wider audience of both esports enthusiasts and chess fans.
The competition will feature some of the world’s top grandmasters, with players qualifying through the Champions Chess Tour and other pathways.
Carlsen Returns as Defending Champion
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen enters the tournament as the reigning Esports World Cup champion. The Norwegian star won the first title in 2025 after defeating French-Iranian Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja in the final and claiming the $250,000 winner’s prize.
Carlsen, who also serves as a chess ambassador for the Esports World Cup, described last year’s event as “an amazing show” and praised the unique atmosphere created by combining elite chess with esports production.
American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, India’s Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin, and several other leading players are also expected to contend for the championship.

Chess Continues Its Esports Expansion
The return of chess highlights the game’s increasing presence in the esports ecosystem. Online platforms and streaming have transformed chess into one of the most-viewed mind sports globally, particularly following the surge in popularity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Esports World Cup itself has expanded rapidly and now features dozens of titles and one of the largest overall prize pools in esports. Chess remains among the most distinctive disciplines in the lineup, blending centuries of tradition with modern competitive gaming.
With Paris set to host the finals and a $1.5 million prize fund on the line, the 2026 Esports World Cup promises another landmark chapter in chess’s growing esports journey.
