A bus carrying pilgrims crashed down a steep gorge in the Chungi Morh area of Akhnoor in Jammu district on Thursday afternoon, killing at least 21 people and injuring 29 others, according to officials.

21 dead as bus falls in gorge in Jammu and Kashmir

A bus carrying pilgrims crashed down a steep gorge in the Chungi Morh area of Akhnoor in Jammu district on Thursday afternoon, killing at least 21 people and injuring 29 others, according to officials.

According to an official, the bus was traveling from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh to Shiv Khori in Reasi district when it was involved in an accident.

He stated that the bus fell around 200 meters into a deep valley, prompting a rescue operation and evacuating injured passengers to a hospital.

Muhammad Saleem Khan, Block Medical Officer Akhnoor, informed KNO that 21 people were taken to the hospital dead, while 29 were injured. “The critically injured have been referred to GMC Jammu for specialized treatment,” added the official.

President Droupadi Murmu expresses grief

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu expressed sadness at the incident. “Pained beyond words to learn about the loss of lives in a bus accident in Akhnoor near Jammu. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I wish speedy recovery of the injured,” she remarked in a post on X.

Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha described the tragedy as “heart-rending” and stated that the administration is offering all available assistance.

“The bus accident in Akhnoor, Jammu is heart-rending. I condole the loss of lives and pray to the almighty to give the bereaved families the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. The administration is providing all possible assistance to the bereaved families and is also extending medical facilities to those who have been injured,” he said in a post on X.
