The tournament will feature five teams and will be held from 23 February to 17 March 2024.
Based on total points after the double round robin league, the top three clubs advance to the postseason. The squad with the most points will advance to the championship game by default.
The teams in second and third place face off against one another in this stage (in a match titled “Eliminator”). The victor of the next Eliminator match advances to the championship event. The Women’s Premier League champions will be announced based on the outcome of the championship game. It will be interesting to see who wins the title this year!
Mumbai Indians
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) second season will probably provide the Mumbai Indians with a bigger challenge than the first one did. The T20 competition is moving to Bengaluru and Delhi, so they will not have the advantage of partisan fans like they did at home sites last year, on top of the weight of being the defending champions.
“We just want to do what we did last year, keep things simple and enjoy our cricket,” said Harmanpreet at MI’s pre-tournament press conference in Mumbai.
Delhi Capitals
Arguably the best team of last season, although not the winners, Delhi Capitals are set to enter WPL 2024 with the most complete squad yet again. In terms of balance, they have all bases covered – with power and depth in batting, arguably the finest wicketkeeper in the competition, variety in the bowling attack and an incredibly successful captain at the helm of affairs. Most importantly, they are likely to have experienced international players running through their XI, and ample to give cover on the bench.
To begin with, the runner-up from the previous year had nothing to fill. The Delhi Capitals’ evening at the WPL auction table this season was mainly calm. There weren’t many openings left after the release of just three athletes, among them left-arm pacer Tara Norris of the USA. They had the second-lowest amount of money to spend, Rs 2.25 Crore, but they focused on their big acquisition, Annabel Sutherland, and spent the maximum amount possible—Rs 2 Crore. They have strengthened both their batting and pace departments this year.
Gujarat Giants
Gujarat Giants‘ (GG) roster was disrupted by the loss of important players at the beginning of the 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL), and head coach Rachel Haynes and team mentor Mithali Raj acknowledged that “shuffling the deck wasn’t easy” following the team’s elimination. Australia’s opener and chosen captain, Beth Mooney, sustained a calf injury on the first day of the competition, which prevented her from playing the rest of the WPL and severely hurt her team’s chances.
In Mooney’s absence, the team was led by Sneh Rana, an all-rounder from India. In the five-team competition in 2023, the Giants had come in last. As of right present, Rana is the vice captain. “They (Mooney and Rana) will be part of the leadership group with head coach Michael Klinger, mentor and advisor Mithali Raj, and assistant coach Nooshin Al Khadee,” stated a release from the team.
After the dissapointing last year, the team will look to turn the tables in the second edition.
RCB
With a roster that includes some of the greatest stars in the league, RCB Women are among the strongest teams on paper. In an attempt to improve its luck in the Women’s Premier League, the team will hope that its performances match.
Royal Challengers Bangalore is hoping for a turn around after a dismal showing in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) debut season, where it ended second from the bottom with two victories in eight games.
Expectations were high for the previous season due to its well-known capped players, including veteran international stars like Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, and Heather Knight as well as regulars from India like Smriti Mandhana and Renuka Thakur. But the pros either didn’t fire at all or didn’t fire consistently.
UP Warriorz
The UP Warriorz Squad for 2024 has a 18-member team which includes: Alyssa Healy, Anjali Sarvani, Deepti Sharma, Grace Harris, Kiran Navgire, Lauren Bell, Laxmi Yadav, Parshavi Chopra, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, S. Yashasri, Shweta Sehrawat, Sophie Ecclestone, Tahlia Mcgrath, Dani Wyatt, Vrinda Dinesh, Saima Thakor, Poonam Khemnar, Gouher Sultana. Meanwhile, Alyssa Healy is going to lead UP Warriorz Womens Squad in WPL and Jon Lewis will be the head coach of UP Warriorz Womens Squad.
